'He was the only one in the room who could see it. His attention stayed there for one beat, two beats, three beats, far too long. Yet who could blame him for not being able to pull his gaze away from that?'
When something distracts Secret Agent, Sean King, for a split second, it costs him his career and presidential candidate, Clyde Ritter, his life. But what stole his attention? And why was Ritter shot? Eight years later, Michelle Maxwell, is on the fast track through the ranks of the Secret Service when her career is stopped short: presidential candidate, John Bruno, is abducted from a funeral home while under her protection. The similarity between the two cases drives Michelle to re-open investigations into the Ritter fiasco and join forces with attractive ex-agent, King. The pair are determined to get to the bottom of what happened in those critical moments. Meanwhile, high-ranking members of the legal system and key witnesses from both cases are going missing. King is losing friends, colleagues and clients fast and his ex-lover, Joan Dillinger, is playing curious games - she wants Sean back, but she also owes him for something...

Murray Davies Collaborator Pbk published September 2004 by Pan at £6.99 ISBN: 033049080X

An enthralling what-if action adventure in the tradition of FATHERLAND, but set in occupied Britain December 1940 and England lies under German occupation. In the West Country, Nick Penny comes home after four months as a prisoner of war to act as interpreter to the provincial governor. He finds his father dead, his mother crippled, and his best friend Roy heavily involved in a resistance movement. When war hero Matty Cordington returns to run his father's estate, the three friends are re-united in a common purpose. Life under the occupation becomes a compromise at every level. Nick's sister Joan sleeps with a profiteer to find food for her family. There are leaks in the resistance movement, and Matty's girlfriend is fingered and dispatched. The occupation turns nastier as Hitler invades Russia, with less food and greater demands on the civilian population to labour in the Reich. Britain's Jews are first deported, then the 'Final Solution' is enacted on English soil. But treachery still dogs the resistance and, hunted by the Gestapo and the British police, Nick and his girlfriend Angel desperately race to eliminate the real traitor. The story then escalates to an explosive climax at the very centre of occupational power.

John Fullerton The Monkey House Pbk published August 2004 by Pan at £6.99 ISBN: 0330419757

Mail On Sunday Powerful and authentic
Literary Review Absolutely first-rate...shocking enough to steal the breath and bruise the heart...Too good to miss.
Irish Times Highly accomplished. This is writing of the first rank...
The Observer Fullerton captures the grit and dust of the imploding city beautifully.
The Economist Well-written and tightly plotted, The Monkey House is a chilling, angry thriller...

Rosso is the Detective Inspector trying to find a brutal murderer in the heart of a Balkan city ravaged by war. He has learnt to take each day as it comes, with bullets anddeath around every corner. Luka is crime boss, intent on exploiting the misery of his city's inhabitants while also providing the only means of defence they have left. Tanja is the young woman loved, and set up, by both men and faced with an impossible conflict of. Flett is the foreign reporter, a citizen who hears and sees it all, partially protected by his job, but like the others, sucked in to the mire that is Sarajevo, once an elegant capital, now a battered but defiant place torn apart by a civilisation that has turned on itself.

"I wouldn't compare this to Gorky Park, I would compare it to Dante's Inferno. The mystery is, why aren't there more books as good as this? The reason is that very few people of us have been to places as dark as this, and John Fullerton has." - Martin Cruz Smith, author of Gorky Park
"With a clarity that is sharp and painful, Fullerton's first novel captures the emotions of small people trapped in a mad war: terror and privation, compassion and Balkan gallows humour. Given his narrative drive and masterly suspense, he has a very serious future." - Daily Telegraph

John Fullerton was a Reuters journalist who reported from 38 countries and covered a dozen wars before he turned to novel-writing. All his books - The Monkey House, A Hostile Place and Give Me Death - are partly based on personal experience.

Minette Walters Disordered Minds Pbk published August 2004 by Pan at £6.99 ISBN: 033042002X

See Review by Cath Staincliffe author of the popular Sal Kilkenny mysteries and the series creator of TV Blue Murder
See Review by Bernard Knight ex Home Office Pathologist and author of the highly acclaimed Crowner John series

In 1970, Harold Stamp, a retarded, reclusive twenty-year-old was convicted on disputed evidence and a retracted confession of brutally murdering his grandmother - the one person who understood and protected him. Less than three years later he is dead, driven to suicide by isolation and despair. A fate befitting a murderer, perhaps, but what if he were innocent? Thirty years on, Jonathan Hughes, an anthropologist specialising in social stereotyping, comes across the case by accident. He finds alarming disparities in the evidence and has little doubt that Stamp's conviction was a terrible miscarriage of justice. But how far is he prepared to go in the search for justice? Is the forgotten story of one friendless young man compelling enough to make him leave his books and face his own demons? And with what result? If Stamp didn't murder Grace Jeffries then somebody else did... and sleeping dogs are best left alone...

Rusty Young Marching Powder Pbk published July 2004 by Pan at £7.99 ISBN: 0330419587

This is the story of Thomas McFadden, a small-time English drug smuggler who was arrested in Bolivia and thrown inside the notorious San Pedro prison. He found himself in a bizarre world, the prison reflecting all that is wrong with South American society. Prisoners have to pay an entrance fee and buy their own cells (the alternative is to sleep outside and die of exposure), prisoners' wives and children often live inside too, high-quality cocaine is manufactured and sold from the prison, and all the police from the governor downwards can be bribed. Under the surface is a frightening level of violence - Thomas's life was often in danger and one of his friends was murdered by the police when he threatened to expose the corruption in the prison. Thomas ended up making a living by giving backpackers tours of the prison - he became a fixture on the backpacking circuit and was named in the Lonely Planet guide to Bolivia. When he was told that for a bribe of $5000 his sentence could be overturned, it was the many backpackers who'd passed through who sent him the money.
