Carol Anne Davis Couples Who Kill: Profiles of Deviant Duos Pbk published October 2006 by Allison Busby at £7.99 ISBN: 0749081759

Profiles of Deviant Duos
What drives attractive male cousins to rape and kill ten young women? Why do an altar girl and her boyfriend lure innocent victims into their customised torture van? Couples who kill comprise only twenty per cent of killers, but they often murder serially and are responsible for particularly inhumane deaths. Sadistic friends, psychotic sisters and an increasingly pathological mother-son team are amongst those profiled in this exploration of the world's most deviant duos. There are infamous British cases, such as the Moors Murderers and the Wests, as well as many equally disturbing but less well-known ones. In the third of this series, which focuses on the psychology of murderers, Carol Anne Davis explores the formative influences of these killers and their deadly dynamics. Comprising of thirteen in-depth case studies and exclusive interviews with experts and one of the Wests' surviving victims, "Couples Who Kill" provides an unequalled study of this disturbing subject.

From the Author
Couples Who Kill profiles twenty six British and American murderers, many of them serial killers. Each profile explores the killer's background, the relationship with their co-killer, the homicides, and what has happened since the trial.
There are also fifteen case studies in themed chapters such as British Couples Who Kill Children and Bizarre Couples Who Kill, the latter including cases from Germany, Mexico and France.
Several of the couples were sadistic lovers, others were friends or close relatives. Yet even those who swore undying love had often turned on each other by the time they went to trial.
Because couples who kill are often lust murderers, the victims were mainly in their teens or early twenties. But there are exceptions - the oldest victim was seventy seven, the youngest only a few minutes old.
Though the cases are harrowing, there is occasionally hope: one teenage killer, hugely influenced by his much more damaged girlfriend, has studied psychology in prison for many years now, apparently understands his earlier pathology and genuinely seems to have turned his life around.
Once again I'm grateful to the authority figures I consulted, including a man who met serial killer Charles Ng and a woman who was abducted by Rose & Fred West. I also interviewed a crime writer who'd co-authored a book with a Home Office pathologist who autopsied one of the victims of a particularly vicious and largely forgotten British triple killer.
In the third of this series, which focuses on the psychology of murderers, Carol Anne Davis explores the formative influences of these killers and their deadly dynamics. Comprising of thirteen in-depth case studies and exclusive interviews with experts and one of the Wests' surviving victims, Couples Who Kill provides an unequalled study of this disturbing subject.

A chilling read and not for the faint-hearted' Scotland on Sunday
'In this well written, eminently readable reference work, crime writer and criminologist Carol Anne Davis tackles her subject in a way that avoids the extremes of tacky goriness and dry-as-dust theorising that mars most true crime books' Time Out

David Donachie An Awkward Commission Published December 2006 by Allison Busby at £18.99 ISBN: 074908166X

Since being pressed into service, John Pearce has endured a hectic whirlwind of events, facing wild storms at sea and bitter battles with the enemy. His recent, surprising promotion means that he is now finally free to follow his own wishes, rather than being forced to serve in King George's Navy. However, the same does not apply for the trio of Pearce's closest friends who, with Pearce as their leader, call themselves the Pelicans. Whilst Pearce is indulging himself in London, his friends are shipped off to the Mediterranean. Riddled with guilt over leaving them and still haunted by his father's execution at the guillotine, Pearce vows to liberate the men who have stuck by him through thick and thin. Having spent months trying to get on dry land, he now has no choice; he must take ship and follow them. His application to William Pitt for a place finds him sailing towards the Mediterranean with secret despatches for Admiral Lord Hood. South and ahead of him, his Pelicans are serving under a brutal tyrant aboard a 74-gun ship. Meanwhile, just off Toulon, Pearce's sworn enemy, Captain Ralph Barclay, puts the lives of his crew as well as that of his beautiful young wife at risk in his vain search for glory. With help being withheld by all higher powers, Pearce is obliged to embark on a dangerous mission before he can free his friends: at stake, the whole British position in the Mediterranean.

John Gardner Troubled Midnight Pbk published November 2006 by Allison Busby at £6.99 ISBN: 0749082992

1943 saw the preparation for the greatest invasion in history, the assault on Hitler's Fortress Europe, is underway in the United Kingdom. The skies are full of training aircraft, their engines merging with the throb of the RAF and USAAF bombers heading on round-the-clock missions against Germany. With fresh bloodshed on the horizon, the coming Christmas preparations seem even more poignant. But with just ten days to go the seasonal mood is shattered in the quiet market town of Wantage in Berkshire when Detective Chief Superintendent, Tommy Livermore and DS Suzie Mountford, Tommy's right-hand woman and secret lover, are called to investigate the discovery of two tortured and beaten bodies. When the bodies are identified as Lieutenant-Colonel Tim Weaving, a commanding officer stationed at a nearby airfield; and Emily Bascombe, wife of the town's hero, Tommy and Suzie are joined by Curry Shepherd, a representative of the Intelligence Services. It is possible that an enemy agent has interrogated Tim Weaving whilst he was in possession of highly confidential information. Things become urgent as Suzie finds herself seconded to War Office Intelligence Liaison and so enters the secret world... A surprising, dark and imaginative novel from one of Britain's best thriller writers, "Troubled Midnight" makes for compelling reading.

DCI Michael Thackeray knows you can never truly become inured to the sight of death. Especially when there are children involved. On entering the kitchen he is faced with the bloody bodies of a mother and her young daughter, still clutching her teddy bear. And outside the horror continues; a trail of crimson in the white snow leads them to another victim, a girl, who, by chance, is still alive. With Scott, another young child, missing, and the father gone, the police come to the inevitable conclusion that this cruel tragedy is the result of a domestic row turned violent. Whilst Thackeray concentrates on finding the children's father, Gordon Christie, his journalist lover Laura Ackroyd begins to wonder just who the missing man is. With the home devoid of any personal items and no traceable records of a man with that name, she suspects that this case could turn out to be more complicated than it first appears. It is a viewpoint, Thackery comes to share when he finds that his investigation is blocked at every turn, driving him to the brink of resignation and Laura to despair. As things fall apart, the tangle of violence Laura and Thackeray uncover turns lethal, and their lives hang in the balance as the full tragedy of the elusive Gordon Christie is eventually uncovered...

Bernard Knight 'Master of the one-liner and the quips which we all wish we had thought of ourselves'

It would seem that Angel could take it easy with his latest case however; finding the retired Mr Ellrington’s long-lost love shouldn’t be too demanding, should it? Handling his partner Amy May, fashionista turned fearsome nesting mother-to-be, as well as his ailing father and his Page 3 girlfriend, might be another matter though.
From meeting Huddersfield’s very own Double-O-Seven, to getting entangled in a shootout where the OAPs are acting like kids, Angel’s latest caper boasts a cast of unforgettable characters and the indefatigable humour that rightly makes Mike Ripley the King of Comedy Crime.

Micky Spillane The Mike Hammer Omnibus: Volume 2 Pbk published October 2006 by Allison Busby at £9.99 ISBN: 074908040X

See Review by Martin Edwards - author of the highly acclaimed Harry Devlin Mysteries

New York Times `Mickey Spillane is a master'
Guardian `The 20th century's bestselling novelist'

This work includes three novels: "One Lonely Night"; "The Big Kill"; and, "Kiss Me, Deadly".

Mickey Spillane said "If the public likes you, you're good". The public liked him - enough to make him one of the bestselling novelists of all time. Not just because he was good, but because he was the best. What's more, he was the first. Mickey Spillane's classic Mike Hammer detective novels may have appalled intellectuals and outraged moralists, but beneath the feverish prose, beyond the raw explosion of sex and violence, Spillane wrote honestly, simply, astonishingly about loyalty. And betrayal. Collected here are three of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer novels that really deliver the goods, one shade blacker than noir - stories that begin in the gutter and go down from there. Here is a world where the only crime is getting caught, where justice can be bought for the price of a beer, and where corruption lies around every corner. This is Mike Hammer's world. Welcome to it...and watch out.

Micky Spillane The Mike Hammer Omnibus:Vol 1 Pbk published October 2006 by Allison Busby at £9.99 ISBN: 0749080353

See Review by Martin Edwards - author of the highly acclaimed Harry Devlin Mysteries

Guardian `The 20th century's bestselling novelist'
New York Times `Mickey Spillane is a master'

This work includes three novels: "I, The Jury"; "My Gun Is Quick"; and, "Vengeance Is Mine".

In Mickey Spillane's classic private eye novels, the action exploded in a bone-crunching catharsis. Men and women didn't make love - they collided. Tough brutes used their fists to drive home a message. Tougher broads used guile. And no one's morals were loftier than the gutter; no apologies; little redemption. These novels rendered critics powerless, shocked intellectuals, inspired a new wave of pulp mayhem, and left the public hungry for more. Given their hot, fever-pitch prose and breathless pacing, Spillane's Mike Hammer novels quickly became one of the most successful series in publishing history - an innovative, no-holds barred, ultravisceral explosion of sex and violence that made Hammer a literary legend and Spillane one of the bestselling authors of all time. After almost sixty years, neither has lost his power to deliver a knockout punch. Find out for yourself in this omnibus edition featuring the first three Mike Hammer novels by the master of the hard-boiled mystery.

June Thomson The Secret Notebooks of Sherlock Holmes Published December 2006 by Allison Busby at £17.99 ISBN: 0749006986
See Review by Martin Edwards - author of the highly acclaimed Harry Devlin Mysteries
See Review by Rafe McGregor

In Sherlock Holmes’s London, reputations are fragile and scandal can be ruinous. In order to protect the names of the good (and the not-so-good), John F. Watson comes to the decision that his accounts of some of his friend’s most brilliant cases must never see the light of day. Concealing the manuscripts in an old despatch box deep in the vaults of a Charing Cross bank, Dr Watson preserves the honour of others and in doing so proves himself a true gentleman as well as a good friend. But then a hundred years pass, and the mysteries outlast the memories of those they once could have harmed …
An aluminium crutch betrays the criminal who relies upon it for support…An Italian Cardinal lies dead in a muddy yard in Spitalfields … What do a pair of suspiciously successful gamblers have in common with the Transylvanian mind-reader, Count Rakoczi? And how can Holmes and Watson outwit the jewel thief who has the nerve to steal from the King of Scandinavia?

In the fifth of her forays into the Watson archives, June Thomson effortlessly recreates Holmesian London, from the glittering hotels to the overcrowded slums, and in doing so pulls the reader back into a fictional world that has become the stuff of legend. As the voice of Dr Watson, Thomson raises the dead in an act of deception that could fool even Holmes himself. The Secret Notebooks of Sherlock Holmes proves that a true classic not only stands the test of time, but that it can keep on regenerating in the hands of a rightful heir. Thomson’s talent for intelligent pastiche, combined with her wonderful understanding of a very famous friendship, make this a long-awaited treat for Holmes devotees and newcomers alike.
