Nightclub bouncer Brooklyn Rhodes goes off the rails after the death of his girlfriend in a skiing accident. He hides away in Cyprus for a year and learns the art of card counting at blackjack. Returning to England after a successful gambling spell in Atlantic City, he meets up with Russian waitress Katya and a businessman called Rex Hollings. Roulette Rex, as he's known to his friends, is a successful gambler who has business problems that need sorting out. He befriends Brooklyn because he thinks he may be able to help him. He suspects Brooklyn has a criminal past, just from the way he carries himself, and from the look in his suspicious eyes. Katya likes Brooklyn straight away and they start meeting secretly to see if anything comes of it. The only problem is, Katya has a young baby called Vika, and will Brooklyn, a man who lives by his own rules, be willing to take the both of them on if she can prise herself away from her miserable husband? As Brooklyn becomes entangled in both of their lives, his own past starts catching up with him, a past that includes both manslaughter and robbery in Atlantic City.
