Set early in 1980, this is a story that will appeal to readers of all ages. It is a different kind of ‘detective’ novel that retains its secrets until the end.
The Candidate is a young woman named Jemina Haldane, recently moved to north Nottinghamshire from her comfortable family home in Surrey. She shares a house with a school-friend, Polly Morris, a serious-minded and competent person completely different in character to Jem. While out walking her dog near a disused coal mine, Jem discovers a woman’s body, the face badly mutilated.
On meeting Stuart Parry, the detective inspector in charge of the case, Jem is immediately drawn to him, though disconcerted to find that he is a good friend of Polly’s, and feels the first pangs of jealousy. A love-hate relationship develops during which, more by luck than judgement, Jem manages to keep one step ahead of Stuart in his investigations.
The search to identify the body becomes paramount to Jem for personal reasons. She discovers that her background is not what she has been led to believe and, on the strength of this discovery and her attempts to impress Stuart, her own personality begins to change. Jem’s hilarious attempts at finding a job eventually bear fruit when she is employed in an ‘unsuitable’ establishment where she makes friends with Micky, whom the police are trying to trace.
As the investigation proceeds, Jem’s own life is in peril and she becomes A Candidate For Killing.
