Gordon Ferris Truth Dare Kill Pbk published May 2007 by Creme de la Crime Books at £7.99 ISBN: 095515894X

He has implemented computers for the Ministry of Defence, and provided strategic advice to international banks... enough excitement for one lifetime, you'd imagine.
But not for Gordon Ferris - though he does sometimes wonder if that's where he developed an interest in spies and crooks.
"As a partner in one of the Big Four accountancy firms, I did a lot of long-haul flying," he says, "and whiled away the hours by writing about troubled heroes, dissolute women and bloody mayhem. When my fictional world began to seem more real and far more interesting than the real one, I handed in my pinstripes and grew a writer's beard."
The result is Truth Dare Kill, his debut novel published in May by innovative indie Creme de la Crime.
Gordon's hero is Danny McRae, a war-damaged ex-SOE agent now working as a private eye and desperately seeking answers to far-reaching questions about his own past.
"He's tough but fallible, driven and obsessive, yet is melted by a woman's smile and has a romantic streak a mile wide," Gordon says. " He's Le Carre's Smiley and of course Chandler's Marlowe.
"I'm also fascinated by the post-war years when people picked up their lives. A London scarred and broken, wreathed in yellow smog but defiantly regenerating, is the perfect `noir' landscape in which to unleash my tortured hero. He's not me, but maybe I wish he was..." Truth Dare Kill is the second in Creme de la Crime's new Period Pieces strand, which sets out to stretch the boundaries of historical crime.
"We're aiming to keep our options wide open," says managing editor Lynne Patrick. "Any era from ancient history up to the 1960s will be eligible."
