Philip Ardagh The Scandalous Life of the Lawless Sisters Published November 2008 by Faber at £9.99 ISBN: 0571239048
In The Not-So-Very-Nice Goings-On at Victoria Lodge, Philip Ardagh uncovered skulduggery of the murkiest kind lurking within the seemingly innocent illustrations of The Girls' Own Paper. In "The Silly Side of Sherlock Holmes" he created 'A Brand New Adventure Using A Bunch of Old Pictures' from the "Strand Magazine". Now, in "The Scandalous Life of the Lawless Sisters", he has exposed the antics of one of the Victorian underworld's most notorious and feared all-female gangs by applying new captions to pictures from Punch of 1880.

Paul Auster Collected Novels: v. 3 Published October 2008 by Faber at £30.00 ISBN: 0571243045
In "Timbuktu", troubled Brooklyn poet-saint Willy G. Christmas embarks on one last great adventure in the company of his canine sidekick Mr Bones.
In "The Book of Illusions" a grieving professor finds his obsession with the true-life story of a great silent comedian leading him into a mysterious shadow-world.
In "Oracle Night" a novelist lately recovered from near-fatal illness falls under the spell of a blank notebook that is seemingly the source of eerie premonitions and bewildering events.
And in "The Brooklyn Follies" an uncle and his nephew, both wounded by past misfortunes, wind up in the same Brooklyn neighbourhood and find their lives profoundly affected by a little girl who refuses to speak.
Highly varied, yet instantly recognisable, these four novels comprise the most recent chapter in the ongoing career of one of America's most enduring and fascinating writers.

Paul Auster was born in New Jersey in 1947. Since 1974 he has published poems, essays, novels, screenplays and translations. He also edited the anthology True Tales of American Life. His latest novel is Man in the Dark (2008).

Sebastian Barry The Secret Scripture Pbk published October 2008 by Faber at £7.99 ISBN: 0571239617

Nearing her one hundredth birthday, Roseanne McNulty faces an uncertain future, as the Roscommon Regional Mental hospital where she's spent the best part of her adult life prepares for closure. Over the weeks leading up to this upheaval, she talks often with her psychiatrist Dr Grene. This relationship, guarded but trusting after so many years, intensifies and complicates as Dr Grene mourns the death of his wife. Told through their respective journals, the story that emerges - of Roseanne's family in 1930s Sligo - is at once shocking and deeply beautiful. Refracted through the haze of memory and retelling, Roseanne's story becomes an alternative, secret history of Ireland's changing character. Exquisitely written, it is also the story of a life blighted by terrible mistreatment and ignorance, and yet marked still by love and passion and hope.

Sebastian Barry was born in Dublin in 1955 and educated at The Catholic University School and Trinity College, Dublin, where he was later Writer Fellow in 1996. His plays include Boss Grady's Boys (1988), The Steward of Christendom (1995), Our Lady of Sligo (1998), and The Pride of Parnell Street (2007), and his novels, The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty (1998), Annie Dunne (2002), and most recently A Long Long Way (2005), which was the Dublin: One City One Book choice for 2007 and was shortlisted for the Man Booker and the Dublin International Impac Prize. He has won among other awards the Irish-America Fund Literary Award, The Christopher Ewart-Biggs Prize, the London Critics Circle Award, and The Kerry Group Irish Fiction Prize. He lives in Wicklow with his wife Ali and three children, Merlin, Coral and Tobias.

Lionel Davidson Chelsea Murders Pbk published October 2008 by Faber at £12.00 ISBN: 0571242987

This book is a winner of the Crime Writer's Association Gold Dagger Award. 'Lionel Davidson is one of the best and most versatile thriller writers we have' - "Daily Telegraph". A terrifying and grotesque figure bursts into a young art student's room. Head covered with a clown's wig, face concealed by a smiling mask, it wears the rubber gloves of a surgeon. Seizing the girl, she is chloroformed, suffocated and - horrifyingly - beheaded. It's only the beginning of a series of murders terrorising London's fashionable bohemia. The police target three avant-garde filmmakers. One of them is mocking the other two - and openly taunting the police as well. Their film itself shows clues. Indeed the murderer even shows himself - in a mask. But which of them is behind it? That's the problem. Fast paced, terrifying and gripping, this is a page-turning thriller from a master of the genre.

Lionel Davidson was born in 1922 in Hull, Yorkshire. He left school early and worked as a reporter before serving in the Royal Navy during World War II. His first novel, The Night of Wenceslas, was published in 1960 to great critical acclaim and drew comparisons to Graham Greene and John le Carre. It was followed by The Rose of Tibet (1962), A Long Way to Shiloh (1966) and The Chelsea Murders (1978). He has thrice been the recipient of the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger Award and, in 2001, was awarded the CWA's Cartier Diamond Dagger lifetime achievement award.
