Steve Berry The Venetian Betrayal Pbk published December 2008 by Hodder at £6.99 ISBN: 0340933453

Cotton Malone is back and the stakes were never higher: a deadly virus that could wipe out civilisation as we know it -- and a cure that lies buried in the past. The Venetian League, a secret group of 45 political and economic leaders from around the world, has joined forces with a coalition of former Soviet republics to create a potentially devastating biological weapon, a bird flu-like virus that has been artificially mutated to pass from human to human. Whoever develops the cure would control the future of global warfare. Yet that cure may have been discovered centuries ago, and if so the clue to the location of the formula lies buried with Alexander the Great. When Cotton Malone's former companion Cassiopeia Vitt hears about it, she and Cotton join the hunt for Alexander's long-lost tomb, and what at first seems to Cotton a wild quest for the answer to a perplexing historical riddle becomes a harrowing fight for truth that has unimaginable repercussions, both geopolitical and terrifyingly personal.

Steve Berry lives on the coast in Georgia, USA, with his wife and daughter. He is a lawyer who has traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, and Russia. His first two novels, THE AMBER ROOM and THE ROMANOV PROPHECY, were US bestsellers; his most recent three books, THE THIRD SECRET, THE TEMPLAR LEGACY and THE ALEXANDRIA LINK, were New York Times and international bestsellers. His books have been published in 39 countries and translated into 37 languages. (20080504)

Peter Dickinson A Pride of Heroes Published October 2008 by Hodder at £0.00 ISBN: 0340042605
The second book in the James Pibble series
Americans may have Colonial Williamsburg, but for the Brits, there's "Old England," an elaborate theme-park that pays homage to a similarly imaginary glorious past. At Old England, the woods are lush with game-birds, servants know their place, and round every corner is a pink-cheeked, mob-capped maid, bobbing a curtsey and trilling "lawk-a-mussy!" in a rustic brogue. It's no wonder the tourists are happy to buy tickets to a yesterday that never was. Lately, though, there's been a fly in the Old England ointment. The two doddering old war-heroes who own the estate seem to have slipped from charmingly eccentric to disturbingly nuts, and one of the "servants" has committed suicide. Dispatched to investigate the death, Inspector Jimmy Pibble is half-hypnotized by Old England's allure, but when he forces himself to poke beneath the daydream, what he finds is not exactly a green and pleasant land.
