Alan Hruska Wrong Man Running [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Severn House Digital at £5.20 ISBN: B005Y0BY56

At the beginning of this compelling novel, Rick Cornith—driven careerist, brilliant prosecutor, and the heir apparent to the district attorney’s job in Manhattan—is assigned a case involving a series of increasingly sadistic rapes. When the victims, all prominent women at the acme of their careers, begin identifying Cornith as their assailant, he takes flight.
No one who knows him well believes him capable of committing such shocking crimes, including his ex-wife. His children, made to suffer at school, are hurt and confused. And yet the evidence against him keeps mounting. When his ex-wife is herself sexually attacked, she in turn pegs Cornith as the culprit.
Attorney-turned-novelist Alan Hruska’s Wrong Man Running is the story of Cornith’s frantic search to find the man he thinks framed him and the psychological challenges of confronting the possibility that he might be liable for the heinous rapes several women have claimed he committed. Sharp and haunting, Hruska masterfully ratchets up the suspense in this deftly written novel, penning a taut legal thriller in the vein of Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Alan Hruska is a native of New York and a graduate of Yale University and Yale Law School. He worked as a trial lawyer until 2002, representing both public and private clients, all the while nourishing his love of the arts. His first novel, Borrowed Time, was published by Dial Press in 1986, and he cofounded Soho Press, for which he serves as chairman of the board. In 2002 he began writing and directing movies including Nola, The Warrior Class, and Reunion. His 2005 off-Broadway revival of Waiting for Godot earned favorable reviews from the New York Times, the New York Post, and Village Voice. His own plays include New House Under Construction and Ring Twice for Miranda. Wrong Man Running is his second novel.

Stephen Hunt Jack Cloudie [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by HarperVoyager at £8.99 ISBN: B0055P36NI

A tale of high adventure and derring-do set in the same Victorian-style world as the acclaimed The Court of the Air and The Secrets of the Fire Sea.
Thanks to his father's gambling debts, young Jack Keats finds himself on the streets and trying to survive as a pickpocket, desperate to graft enough coins to keep him and his two younger brothers fed.
Following a daring bank robbery gone badly awry, Jack narrowly escapes the scaffold, only to be pressed into Royal Aerostatical Navy. Assigned to the most useless airship in the fleet, serving under a captain who is most probably mad, Jack seems to be bound for almost certain death in the far-away deserts of Cassarabia.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Omar ibn Barir, the slave of a rich merchant lord finds his life turned upside down when his master's religious sect is banned. Unexpectedly freed, he survives the destruction of his home to enter into the service of the Caliph's military forces – just as war is brewing.
Two very similar young men prepare to face each other across a senseless field of war. But is Omar the enemy, or is Jack's true nemesis the sickness at the heart of the Caliph's court? A cult that hides the deadly secret to the origins of the gas being used to float Cassarabia's new aerial navy.
If Jack and his shipmates can discover what Cassarabia's aggressive new regime is trying to conceal, he might survive the most horrific of wars and clear his family's name. If not…

An original Gently novel on which the prime-time BBC series starring Martin Shaw is based.

Speed makes the teenage bikers feel alive, but they soon find that murder is the fastest way to die
A five-mile stretch of arrow-straight road outside Latchford acts like a magnet to beatnik bikers using the road like a drag strip. When one of the bikers is killed in an accident, most people regard it as an inevitable consequence of the kids using drugs and racing bikes for kicks. Jane Jakeman In The Kingdom Of Mists [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Transworld Digital at £7.99 ISBN: B005R20VXW

London, 1900: while Monet paints the wintry mists over the Thames, the bodies of two young women are dragged from its murky depths arousing fears of a return of Jack the Ripper By now a celebrated and successful artist - despite the controversy stirred up by the Impressionist movement - in the early months of the new century, Monet returned to London to paint his famous Thames series. Prompted by memories of an earlier visit in 1870, the old man recalls his youthful struggles, his beloved first wife Camille and his scandalous relationship with Alice Hoschede. And now, in a frenzy of creative activity he paints the haunting canvases that act as a backdrop to a series of grizzly, psychopathic killings. Oliver Craston, a fledgling diplomat, by chance is present when a horribly mutilated body is pulled from the Thames. Mindful of the need to steer clear of controversy, he is unwillingly drawn into the police investigation. Furthermore, with the Foreign Office nervous over French sympathies with the Boers, Oliver's new acquaintance with M. Monet and his son, who are staying in the luxury of the Savoy Hotel, is likely to raise an eyebrow or two. But on the floor above the Monets' suite, given over as a hospital for wounded officers, stalks a far greater danger... and across the river in the backstreet slums of Lambeth are visions of horror beyond even the intuition of the artist. As the naive young diplomat becomes entangled with bohemian society and the seamier side of London that the investigation exposes him to, a disturbing and unfamiliar world opens up to him. This compelling and mutlilayered novel is an atmospheric exploration of the life of an artist, a murder thriller and, like Tulip Fever and Girl With a Pearl Earring, a triumphant example of 'art fiction'. It is illustrated with 12 reproductions of the paintings themselves.

Jane Jakeman is an author and freelance journalist with a doctorate in art history. Her first three novels featured the Byronic detective Lord Ambrose Malfine, which she followed with a modern thriller set on the Riviera. She regularly reviews crime for the Independent, and lives in Oxford.

H.R.F. Keating A Long Walk to Wimbledon [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £4.46 ISBN: B005O7VK9O

For London the worst has happened. There have been riots, huge uncontrolled fires, outbreaks of savage looting, artillery battles, mass flights. The great city lies three parts deserted, open to marauding gangs and beast-wild individuals, its highways and landmarks tumbled like ruined temples.
To Mark, comparatively safe up in less troubled Highgate, there comes a message that his estranged wife is dying over in Wimbledon, right across on the far side of the dangerous bowl of the devastated city. Reluctant almost to sticking-point, he sets out to go to her.
His journey is a story of adventure through the ruins. His immediate business is the simple one of pressing on through all the debris, always driven because he knows that Jasmine will die soon. He may never get there: he may be killed by idiotic accident, torn to pieces by the packs of wild dogs, trapped in one of the communes that within their stockades have established their own ruthlessly puritanical disciplines.
But the difficulties and the dangers teach him lessons as he struggles onwards. He learns from the past. If it was drink, drugs and the dolce vita that had done for his wife, had not something similar destroyed the city too? He learns about the present amid its hazards. And he learns, as he comes at last to the bleak end of his Iong walk, lessons for a just possible future.

H.R.F. Keating Is Skin Deep, Is Fatal [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35 ISBN: B00606NRTE

In the rough, tough world where predatory young beauty queens compete fiercely for money, a murder is committed. Police Constable Peter Lassington is soon enmeshed in a complicated mystery - a mystery made more than usually exotic by the acreage of young feminine flesh that is continuously on show at the Star Bowl ballroom, rehearsing for the contest at which the St. Valentine prizes will be awarded. Lassington's superior, the officer in charge of the case, is Superintendent Ironside. Ironside - polite, sophisticated, devious - is somewhat sceptical about the charms of the young ladies: his thoughts roam forward to his imminent retirement.
This detective novel is carefully plotted and firmly set in a world of bizarre values - values that do not appeal to Ironside, the most striking police detective to appear in fiction for some time. The naked competition of the adolescent beauty queens provides the background to a strange and exciting murder novel, with a surprise ending.

H.R.F. Keating Murder Must Appetize [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35 ISBN: B00606NRH6

Is there anything in this troubled world quite as comforting as a good old-fashioned murder? H.R.F. Keating, doyen of modern detective writers, has little doubt that there's nothing like a corpse in a vicarage or country house conservatory to soothe away the tensions of modern living. In Murder Must Appetite the creator of Inspector Ghote makes an affectionate return journey to the halcyon days of the detective story when Hercule Poirot and Lord Peter Wimsey were young and a touch of arsenic was still the ultimate deterrent. Apart from old friends like Dorothy L. Sayers and Agatha Christie, we meet the less well remembered pioneers of detective fiction, including E.C.R. Lorac (alias for Edith Caroline Rivett) and her bookworm hero Inspector Macdonald; E.R. Punshon and his water swilling Chief Constable: not to mention Beatrice Lestrange Bradley, Gladys Mitchell's 'cacklingly reptilian psychiatric adviser to the Home Office' and many others. H.R.F. Keating's unashamed nostalgia is blended with the critical eye of a master of the detective fiction craft. In fact, Mr. Keating is uniquely equipped to act as guide and philosopher on this enthralling tour of Britain's rich heritage of fictional murder. No self-respecting escapist reader should fail to climb aboard.

Keating, known as "Harry" to friends and family, was born in St. Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex and typed out his first story at the age of eight. He was educated at Merchant Taylor's School in London and later Trinity College, Dublin. In 1956 he moved to London to work as a journalist on the Daily Telegraph newspaper. He was the crime books reviewer for The Times newspaper for fifteen years. He was Chairman of the Crime Writers' Association (CWA) (1970-71), Chairman of the Society of Authors (1983-84) and President of the Detection Club (1985-2000). He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He received the George N. Dove Award in 1995. In 1996 the CWA awarded him the Cartier Diamond Dagger for outstanding services to crime literature. He also wrote screenplays, was a reviewer and wrote a biography of Dame Agatha Christie entitled Agatha Christie: First Lady of Crime. He died on March 27 2011, aged 84.

H.R.F. Keating Death and the Visiting Fireman [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35 ISBN: B00606NRB2

Action, dialogue, and the author's 'stage directions' combine to give a filmic quality to this firstnovel. And not often before has a murder puzzle been solved by a committee of suspects.
Any man or woman travelling on the stagecoach High Flier that morning could have killed the insupportable 'highwayman', George Hamyadis, and had reasons to do so. And that included Foster P. Schlemberger, president of the American Institution for the Investigation of Incendiarism Inc., whose delegates had been greeted at Southampton by this latter-day coaching party in period costume. He may have protested that it was a European crime and no concern of his, but none the less origins lay quite a long way back in another continent.
A scintillating debut

H.R.F. Keating The Strong Man [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35 ISBN: B005O7QBQ6

Here, engrossingly readable from star to finish, is a major novel of adventure with an underlying theme power.
The story is simple. An independent island state in the North Atlantic has fallen under the sway of Rolph Mylchraine, a landowner who has gained ascendancy by stage-managing witchcraft orgies and purveying cheap liquor. Opposing him is Keig, a peasant of extraordinary physical strength who gradually emerges leader on the grand scale. Through their developing struggle, which becomes a guerrilla war in the classic mould, echoes the sombre theme of the fatal tendency of power to corrupt.
Mr Keating, already acknowledged as a writer of distinguished crime novels, has produced at perhaps the height of his powers a book that is not only a new departure for himself but also genuinely original.

H.R.F. Keating Zen there was Murder [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35 ISBN: B00606NQ7W

In a country mansion converted to adult educational courses, Mr Utamaro is lecturing on Zen Buddhism to a small and not entirely appreciative audience. But Zen questions and their seemingly quirkish answers predominate, until they are superseded by two of greater urgency: 'Who stole the wakizashi?' and 'Who killed Flaveen Mills?' H. R. F. Keating provides the solution in the same brilliantly humorous vein which won him so many admirers with his first novel, Death and the Visiting Firemen.

Jesse Kellerman The Brutal Art [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Hachette Digital at £4.99 ISBN: B002TZ3EMA

Ethan Muller is struggling to establish his reputation as a dealer in the cut-throat world of contemporary art when he is alerted to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: in a decaying New York slum, an elderly tenant has disappeared, leaving behind a staggeringly large trove of original drawings and paintings. Nobody can tell Ethan much about the old man, except that he came and went in solitude for nearly forty years, his genius hidden and unacknowledged. Despite the fact that, strictly speaking, the artwork doesn't belong to him, Ethan takes the challenge and makes a name for the old man - and himself. Soon Ethan has to congratulate himself on his own genius: for storytelling and salesmanship. But suddenly the police are interested in talking to him. It seems that the missing artist had a nasty past, and the drawings hanging in the Muller Gallery have begun to look a lot less like art and a lot more like evidence. Sucked into an investigation four decades cold, Ethan will uncover a secret legacy of shame and death, one that will touch horrifyingly close to home - and leave him fearing for his own life.

'Would you believe me if I told you that I was only nine years of age when I killed him?'

Philip Kerr Prague Fatale (Bernie Gunther Mystery 8) [Kindle Edition] Pbk published November 2011 by Quercus at £8.36 ISBN: B005W0ARFQ

Philip Kerr's sequence of historical thrillers featuring private detective Bernie Gunther forms a body of work comparable to the great series of the two masters of the genre, Len Deighton and John le Carre. The Berlin Noir Trilogy quickly established Kerr and Gunther as the perfect combination of writer, character, setting and genre. These gritty, noir thrillers, narrated in Gunther's wry, sardonic voice, range all over Europe and beyond. They span a 20-year period from the mid-30s to the mid-50s, covering the build up to World War 2, the war itself and finally its bitter aftermath. With impeccable research that is accurate in every detail yet never interferes with narrative pace, Philip Kerr has created an epic series of thrillers that deserve all the praise that has been heaped upon them. Prague Fatale is Bernie Gunther's eighth outing. Set in Prague in 1942, it delivers all the fast-paced and quick-witted action that we have come to expect from Philip Kerr. It is an outstanding thriller by a writer at the top of his game.

Philip Kerr is the author of seven other acclaimed Bernie Gunther novels. If the Dead Rise Not won the 2009 CWA Ellis Peters Award for Best Historical Crime Novel. Philip Kerr was born in Edinburgh and now lives in London and Cornwall.

This is a New York mystery from a talented new writer...On a cold winter's morning in New York, NYPD detective Harry Corbin and his partner Adele Bentibi arrive at the scene of a shooting: exdetective David Lodge has been shot dead the morning after he was released from a seven-year sentence for killing a pimp. It looks like a cut-and-dried case: a revenge killing by the dead pimp's brother and his gang. However, as Corbin and Bentibi start digging, they come up against the impenetrable Blue Wall of Silence (the cop version of the Mafia's omerta) and the NYPD bosses seem particularly keen for this case to be laid to rest as quickly - and cleanly - as possible. Corbin is hoping for promotion, so at first he's happy to accept the facts as he's given them, but the overzealous Bentibi is not so easily persuaded. When they start uncovering a murky world of bent cops and cover-ups, they put both their careers - and their lives - in serious danger.

Robert Knightly spent twenty years as a New York policeman before becoming a criminal defense lawyer. He has written TV scripts for Aaron Spelling and NBC and had several short stories published in various anthologies, including Brooklyn Noir, Queens Noir and Manhattan Noir.

Michael Litchfield The Cutter [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Blake Pub at £3.95 ISBN: B005NGFMEA

When Heather Barnett happily opened her front door to a caller one morning in November 2002, little did she know that she was about to come face to face with her killer. Tragically, her mutilated body was discovered by her son and daughter on their return home from school that day. The police quickly ascertained that the murder was premeditated and meticulously planned to the last macabre detail; the killer had not left a single DNA clue - even the bloody footprints made by a distinctive pair of trainers did not lead out of the house but ended in the front room, without further trace. As a bizarre and sickening calling card, the killer had placed a lock of someone else's hair in the victim's hand. Detectives were shocked by the savagery of the murder and baffled by the apparently sadistic ritualism of the killing. Many long months of enquiries followed and, eventually, a lead came from Interpol: the parents of a missing girl in Italy had been sent a lock of hair in the post. Could the two murders be linked and had the police just made the breakthrough they so desperately needed? In this in-depth and chilling book, acclaimed true crime writer Michael Litchfield investigates the full story of Danilo Restivo, the killer behind the murder of Heather Barnett.

The brand new Covert-One novel in the series created by the undisputed master of the thriller genre, Robert Ludlum.

With U.S. intelligence agencies wracked by internal power struggles and paralyzed by bureaucracy, the President is forced to establish his own clandestine group - Covert-One - selected from the very best operators America has to offer. It is only activated as a last resort, when the threat is on a global scale and time is running out. In Northern Uganda an American Special Forces team is wiped out by a group of normally peaceful farmers. Video of the attack shows even women and children possessing almost supernatural speed and strength, consumed with a rage that makes them immune to pain, fear, and all but the most devastating injuries. Covert-One's top operative, Army microbiologist Colonel Jon Smith, is sent to investigate the attack and finds evidence of a parasitic infection that for centuries has been causing violent insanity and then going dormant. This time, though, it's different. The infection is purposely being kept alive and the director of Iranian Intelligence is in Uganda trying to make a deal for a biological weapon to unleash on the West. As Smith and his team are cut off from all outside support, they begin to suspect that forces much more powerful than the Iranians are in play - forces that can be traced to Washington itself.

Bill Cary is a bush pilot living in Lapland in northern Finland, making a precarious living flying aerial survey flights looking for nickel deposits, and occasional charter cargo flights of dubious legitimacy in his beat-up old de Havilland Beaver. Towards the end of the flying season, a wealthy American hunter hires him to fly into a prohibited part of Finland near the Soviet border in order to hunt bear. Subsequently, he is assaulted by thugs when he refuses a charter contract to search for a lost Tsarist treasure, comes under suspicion from the Finnish police for smuggling when Tsarist-era gold sovereigns start turning up, and from the Finnish secret police for espionage. However, things get more serious when the wealthy American's hunter's beautiful sister turns up to search for her brother, and his fellow bush pilots start getting killed off in a series of suspicious accidents. Cary suspects that the events he is increasingly involved in may stem from an incident in his wartime past.
The Most Dangerous Game was a runner-up for the British Crime Writers Association Gold Dagger Award in 1964.

Gregory Maguire Out of Oz: The Final Volume in the Wicked Years [Kindle Edition] Pbk published November 2011 by Morrow at £6.50 ISBN: B0050COHHK

The stunning conclusion to the smash New York Times bestselling series the Wicked Years
Hailed as “bewitching,” “remarkable,” “extraordinary,” “engrossing,” “amazing,” and “delicious,” Gregory Maguire’s Wicked Years series—a sophisticated fantasy cycle inspired by the classic children’s novel The Wizard of Oz—became national bestsellers and the basis for a hit Tony-winning Broadway musical. Now, Maguire returns with the final installment in his transformative work, a thrilling and compulsively readable saga in which the fate of Oz is decided at last. . . .
Once peaceful and prosperous, the spectacular Land of Oz is knotted with social unrest: The Emerald City is mounting an invasion of Munchkinland, Glinda is under house arrest, and the Cowardly Lion is on the run from the law. And look who’s knocking at the door. It’s none other than Dorothy. Yes. That Dorothy.
Yet amidst all this chaos, Elphaba’s granddaughter, the tiny green baby born at the close of Son of a Witch, has come of age. Now it is up to Rain to take up her broom—and her legacy—in an Oz wracked by war.
The stirring, long-awaited conclusion to the bestselling series begun with Wicked, Out of Oz is a magical journey rife with revelations and reversals, reprisals and surprises—the hallmarks of the unique imagination of Gregory Maguire.

Edward Marston A Bespoke Murder (Home Front Detective Series) [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Allison Busby at £4.60 ISBN: B005LG2Y2U

May 1915. With thousands of Britons away in the trenches, a severely depleted police force remains behind to keep the Home Front safe and continue the fight against crime, espionage, and military desertion. In London, Scotland Yard is already overstretched when the sinking of the Lusitania sparks an unprecedented wave of anti-German riots and arson attacks across the city. Among the victims are the immigrant tailor Jacob Stein, found dead in his burnt-out shop.
Initially Jacob's killing appears to be the tragic excess of wartime hysteria - but when it transpires that Jacob had been stabbed amidst the flames, his safe ransacked, and his daughter Ruth raped, the possibility that these assaults were long-premeditated crimes becomes unavoidable.
Detective Inspector Harvey Marmion and his sergeant Joe Keedy must take on this case of cover-ups and contradictions and track down Jacob's killer and Ruth's assailants. As their hunt carries them from the crime-ridden streets of wartime London across the Channel to the chaos of the Front Line, the horrors of crime and policing at a time of total war are brought vividly to life.

Aly Monroe Icelight (Peter Cotton) [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by John Murray at £10.99 ISBN: B005LWQ9O8

1947. Threadbare London endures the bleakest, coldest winter for decades. Food rationing is worse than during the war. Coal supplies run out. The Thames freezes over.
Against a background of black ice, blackouts and the black market, agent Peter Cotton is seconded to Operation Sea-snake. MI5 is in the grip of civil war; MI6 is riddled with traitors. Unsure who to trust - or even who is pulling the strings - Cotton, ever the outsider, must protect an atomic scientist caught up in a vicious homophobic witch-hunt, limit the damage caused by a bully-boy MP, rely on a rent-boy informer and, despite the murderous attentions of a couple of Glasgow razor boys, embark on a ruthless hunt of his own.

Aly Monroe was born and educated in England. Trained in linguistics, she has lived abroad - mostly in Spain - and speaks several languages. She is married and has three children.
