Len Deighton Violent Ward [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Harper at £3.50 ISBN: B005F42IRY

If America is a lunatic asylum, then California is the Violent Ward.
Mickey Murphy is a criminal lawyer with an office in LA’s downtown low-rent district, an ex-wife who bleeds him for money, clients who would plead the Fifth Amendment if they could count that high, and an unrequited passion for his wealthiest client’s wife. To make matters worse, Mickey finds himself embroiled against his wishes in an elaborate and clever scam that’s going askew, and being interrogated by the LAPD about a brutal murder.
With an observant eye and ear for the California ‘scene’, Deighton once again uses his brilliant storytelling skills to propel an exciting and suspenseful narrative at breakneck speed to a dramatic climax in a riot-torn city.
This new reissue includes a foreword from the cover designer, Oscar-winning filmmaker Arnold Schwartzman, and a brand new introduction by Len Deighton, which offers a fascinating insight into the writing of the story.

Len Deighton MAMista [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Harper at £3.48 ISBN: B005F42IOM

Deep in Marxist Guerilla territory a hopeless war is being fought.
The Berlin Wall is demolished. Marx is dead. Try telling that to Ramon and his desperate men hiding in the jungle cradling their AK 47s, dusting off the slabs of Semtex and dreaming of world revolution.
MAMista takes us to the dusty, violent capital of Spanish Guiana in South America, and thence into the depths of the rain forest; the heart of darkness itself. There, four people become caught up in a struggle both political and personal, a struggle corrupted by ironies and deceits, and riddled with the accidents of war. They are four people who never should have found themselves bound together in a mission for revolution.
Ralph Lucas, the Australian doctor, came to the jungle on charitable business, strictly civilian. Tending frontline casualties of war, with too few medical supplies and only a beautiful but untrained woman by his side, was not on the agenda. Gerald Singer, tough, black warrior, with an indomitable sense of humour, was already in guerrilla territory. He can take it. Up to a point. Angel Paz, part charming youngster, part violent hoodlum, has theories about everything. His arrogance will set in motion the last terrible endgame.
But it is Inez who will suffer the most; for being a woman, an educated woman. At guerrilla headquarters she was Ramon's right-hand. In the jungle she is the butt of men's jokes and the subject of their fantasies.
For the men in Washington this MAMista 'patrol' is just one short entry in a busy worldwide agenda. But for the three men and one woman trapped in the jungle of our nightmares it is the sentence of death. Never has Deighton portrayed so accurately the terror and the tedium of war, or the shifting alliances and betrayals between people who have nothing to lose but their lives.
This new reissue includes a foreword from the cover designer, Oscar-winning filmmaker Arnold Schwartzman, and a brand new introduction by Len Deighton, which offers a fascinating insight into the writing of the story.

Don Delillo Libra (Contemporary American Fiction) [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Penguin at £5.20 ISBN: B0023SDQI0

Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas. Friday, November 22, 1963. 12.30 PM.
Shots ring out. A president dies. And a nation is plunged into psychosis.
Don DeLillo's extraordinary Libra is a brilliant reimagining of the events and people surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Concentrating on the lives of Lee Harvey Oswald, some rogue former spooks unhappy with Kennedy's presidency, and Nicholas Branch, a CIA archivist, trying to make sense of or draw inferences from the mass of information after the assassination, Libra presents an unapologeticly provocative picture of America in the second half of the last century.

Don DeLillo was born and raised in New York City. He has written fifteen novels and three stage plays and has won many honours including the National Book Award for White Noise, the International Fiction Prize for Libra, the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for Mao II, the Jerusalem Prize, the Howells Medal for Underworld and the PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction.

John Dickie Blood Brotherhoods: The Rise of the Italian Mafias [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Sceptre at £10.99 ISBN: B0050C877G

BLOOD BROTHERHOODS is the enthralling new history of Italian organised crime by the author of the international bestseller COSA NOSTRA. Mafia. Camorra. 'Ndrangheta. The Sicilian mafia, or Cosa Nostra, is far from being Italy's only dangerous criminal fraternity. The south of the country hosts two other major mafias: the camorra, from Naples and its hinterland; and the 'ndrangheta, the mafia from the poor and isolated region of Calabria that has now risen to become the most powerful mob of all. Each of these brotherhoods has its own methods, its own dark rituals, its own style of ferocity and corruption. Their early history is little known; indeed some of it has been entirely shrouded in myth and silence until now. BLOOD BROTHERHOODS is a book of breathtaking ambition, charting the birth and rise of all three of Italy's mafias. It blends ground-breaking archival research, passionate narrative, and shrewd historical analysis to bring Italy's unique 'criminal ecosystem', and the three terrifying criminal brotherhoods that evolved within it, to life on the page.

John Dickie is Professor of Italian at University College London and has written on many aspects of Italian history. In 2005 he was awarded the title Commendatore dell`Ordine della Stella di Solidarieta` Italiana.

In The Trigger Men, bestselling author Martin Dillon delves into the dark and sinister world of Irish terrorism and counter-terrorism.
Over three decades he has interviewed and investigated some of the most professional, dangerous and ruthless killers in Ireland. Now Dillon explores their personalities, motivations and bizarre crimes. Many of Ireland's assassins learned their trade in fields and on hillsides in remote parts of Ireland, while others were trained in the Middle East or with Basque separatist terrorists in Spain. Another more powerful group of 'trigger men' were the influential figures in the shadows, who were experts in motivating the killers under their control. All of these men, whether they squeezed the trigger on a high-powered rifle, set the timer on a bomb or used their authority to send others out to commit horrific and unspeakable acts of cruelty, are featured in this book. The Trigger Men takes the reader inside the labyrinthine

Life was never going to be easy for Joe Tubbs. Without a father, his role model was his mother, a promiscuous addict who died of an overdose when he was just fifteen. The Hollywood dream kept his fragile mind together, but ridicule and rejection from the industry he loved turned disappointment to anger and rage. When he finally hit on a brilliant idea for a film no one in L.A. would look at his script. Alone and desperate for recognition, Joe decided to bring his script to life and take it to the people. Within days, his chilling deeds spread fear and panic in the city. Suddenly, Joe had a lead role that everyone was talking about. He was finally living the dream. With no leads, bodies piling up and pressure from City Hall mounting, Detective Dan Scott needed all the help he could get. But would a theory put together by small town investigative journalist Leigh Turner help them find the man responsible for bringing terror to the streets of L.A.? C S Forester The Pursued [Kindle Edition] Pbk published November 2011 by Penguin at £8.99 ISBN: B005PVLY04

See Review by Martin Edwards - author of the highly acclaimed Harry Devlin Mysteries

Marjorie had never seen a dead body until she got home one tranquil summer evening and found her sister Dot lying on the kitchen floor in a pretty dress, with her head in the oven. She looked peaceful, as if she was asleep. Their mother suspects, however, that Dot's death was far from natural. What's more, she knows who the killer is - and she is determined to make him suffer. So slowly and meticulously, she plots her revenge. After all, who would suspect a neatly dressed, grey-haired widow of anything? And what could possibly go wrong?
The Pursued, C. S. Forester's dark, twisted tale of murder, lust and retribution, was written in 1935, but its typescript manuscript was lost. More than seven decades later, it has now been rediscovered and is published for the first time. It is a novel years ahead of its time; rewriting the traditions of crime fiction to create a gripping psychological portrayal of obsession, jealousy, torment and the grim underside of suburban London life.

Cecil Scott Forester was the pen name of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith (27 August 1899 - 2 April 1966), an English novelist who rose to fame with tales of naval warfare. His most notable works were the 11-book Horatio Hornblower series, depicting a Royal Navy officer during the Napoleonic era, and The African Queen (1935; filmed in 1951 by John Huston). His novels A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours were jointly awarded the 1938 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction. He began his career with the crime novels Payment Deferred and Plain Murder, now reissued in Penguin Modern Classics along with The Pursued, which was lost for over 60 years.

C S Forester Plain Murder (Penguin Modern Classics) [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Penguin at £5.49 ISBN: B005PVLF3A

At the Universal Advertising Agency on the Strand, London, a murder is being planned. Three men have been discovered taking bribes and face the grim prospect of the dole queue, unless they can get rid of the person who caught them. Their ringleader, thick-set and vicious Mr Morris, soon discovers that killing is far easier than he thought - and that he even has a talent for it. He might, he feels, be superhuman. But as he will discover, there is no such thing as the perfect crime, and no deed goes unpunished.
Taking us into a 1930s London of grimy back streets, smoky cafes and shabby rooms, Plain Murder, C. S. Forester's second crime novel, is a brilliantly atmospheric and gripping portrayal of the dark heart of a killer.

Nicolas Freeling A Long Silence [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35 ISBN: B0063FIGYS

It was not a very important case. No crime had been committed. For Van der Valk the shady dealings of a prosperous Amsterdam jeweler were more of a private puzzle.
Two bullets put paid to that incurable curiosity.

Born in London in 1927, Nicolas Freeling is the author of over thirty titles, many of which are part of the crime genre. His education was broad and he attended a series of schools in England, Ireland and France. He served in the Royal Air Force, and from 1950 worked at various jobs in kitchens, hotels and restaurants throughout Europe. It was this intimate knowledge of the continent that influenced the style and settings of his subsequent books. The first of these was published in 1961. He is best known for the creation of Inspector Piet Van der Valk, an irascible detective engaged in ordinary crime, political intrigue and international affairs. Freeling is married, has four sons and one daughter and currently resides in France.

Misha Glenny DarkMarket [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Vintage Digital at £8.54 ISBN: B00563M39M

The world has become a law enforcer's nightmare and every criminal's dream. We bank online, shop online, date, learn, work and live online. But have the institutions that keep us safe on the streets learned to protect us in the burgeoning digital world? Have we become complacent about our personal security – sharing our thoughts, beliefs and the details of our daily lives with anyone who cares to relieve us of them?
In this fascinating and compelling book, Misha Glenny, author of the international bestseller McMafia, explores the three fundamental threats facing us in the 21st century: cyber crime, cyber warfare and cyber industrial espionage. Governments and the private sector are losing billions of dollars each year, fighting an ever-morphing, often invisible, often super-smart new breed of criminal: the hacker.
Glenny has travelled and trawled the world. And by exploring the rise and fall of the criminal website, DarkMarket, he has uncovered the most vivid, alarming and illuminating stories. Whether JiLsi or Matrix, Iceman, Master Splynter or Lord Cyric; whether Detective Sergeant Chris Dawson in Scunthorpe or Agent Keith Mularski in Pittsburgh, Glenny has tracked down and interviewed all the players – the criminals, the geeks, the police, the security experts and the victims – and he places everyone and everything in a rich brew of politics, economics and history.
The result is simply unputdownable. DarkMarket is authoritative and completely engrossing. It's a must-read for everyone who uses a computer: the essential crime book for our times.

Misha Glenny is a distinguished journalist and historian. As the Central Europe Correspondent first for the Guardian and then for the BBC, he chronicled the collapse of communism and the wars in the former Yugoslavia. He won the Sony Gold Award for outstanding contribution to broadcasting. The author of four books, including the acclaimed McMafia, he has been regularly consulted by the US and European governments on major policy issues and ran an NGO for three years, assisting with the reconstruction of Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo. He now lives in London.

Tariq Goddard The Message [Kindle Edition] Pbk published November 2011 by O Books at £4.93 ISBN: B005KSGGPU

Set in a fictional African state in the grip of a civil war provoked by the emergence of The Mahdi, a pretender to the leadership of the Islamic world, The Message is the latest thriller from Tariq Goddard, an exciting and topical treatment of realpolitik, personal integrity and the real cost of Empire-building. Into the melting pot are thrown Iranian advisors, an SAS contingent, and in the best farcical tradition; a family of unscrupulous English mercenaries, kidnappers of an innocent girl with their own sinister agenda. In the face of violence and unexpected betrayals we see these factions draw inexorably together to a chilling and ultimately redemptive climax. With guarded sentimentality and cheerful nihilism, redolent of Conrad with just the slightest nod to Chuck Norris, The Message is as enjoyable as it is thoughtful, a literary take on current affairs from a rare and unusual talent.

Tariq Goddard was born in 1975 in London. His novel, 'The Picture of Contented New Wealth' won the Independent Publishers award for horror writing, 2010.

Ioan Grillo El Narco: The Bloody Rise of Mexican Drug Cartels [Kindle Edition] Pbk published December 2011 by Bloomsbury at £8.30 ISBN: B0060VB48A

'War' is no exaggeration in discussing the bloodshed that has terrorized Mexico in the past decades. As rival cartels battle for control of a billion-dollar drug trade, the body count - 23,000 dead in five years - and sheer horror beggar the imagination of journalistic witnesses. Cartel gunmen have attacked schools and rehabilitation centers, and murdered the entire families of those who defy them. Reformers and law enforcement officials have been gunned down within hours of taking office. Headless corpses are dumped on streets to intimidate rivals, and severed heads are rolled onto dancefloors as messages to would-be opponents. And the war is creeping northward, towards the United States. El Narco is the story of the ultraviolent criminal organizations that have turned huge areas of Mexico into a combat zone. It is a piercing portrait of a drug trade that turns ordinary men into mass murderers, as well as a diagnosis of what drives the cartels and what gives them such power. Veteran Mexico correspondent Ioan Grillo traces the gangs from their origins as smugglers to their present status as criminal empires. The narco cartels are a threat to the Mexican government - and their violence has now reached as far as North Carolina. El Narco is required reading for anyone concerned about one of the most important news stories of the decade.

Educated in England at the University of Kent, Canterbury, Ioan Grillo has covered Mexico since 2001 for top newspapers, magazines and TV stations in the US and UK. He reports for Time Magazine as well as producing presentations for stations including PBS, ABC and Channel 4. He regularly appears on radio and TV, commenting on Mexican crime and other issues.

John Grisham The Litigators [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Hodder at £10.99 ISBN: B005OKTPKC

The Partners at Finley & Figg - all two of them - often refer to themselves as "a boutique law firm." "Boutique," as in chic, selective and prosperous. They are, of course, none of these things. What they are is a two-bit operation always in search of their big break, ambulance chasers who've been in the trenches much too long making much too little. Their specialties, so to speak, are quickie divorces and DUIs, with the occasional jackpot of an actual car wreck thrown in. After twenty plus years together Oscar Finley and Wally Figg bicker like an old married couple, but somehow continue to scratch out a half-decent living from their seedy offices in southwest Chicago.
And then change comes their way. More accurately, it stumbles in. David Zinc, a young but already burned-out attorney, walks out of his fast-track career at a fancy downtown firm, goes on a serious bender and finds himself literally at the doorstep of our "boutique firm". Once David sobers up and comes to grips with the fact that he's suddenly unemployed, any job - even one with Finley & Figg - looks OK to him.
With their new junior partner on board, F&F are ready to tackle a really big case, a case that could make them rich without requiring them to actually practice much law. An extremely popular drug, Krayoxx , the no. 1 cholesterol reducer for the dangerously overweight, produced by Varrick Labs, a giant pharmaceutical company with annual sales of $25 billion, has recently come under fire as several patients taking it have suffered heart attacks. Wally smells money.
A little online research confirms Wally's suspicions - a huge plaintiff's firm in Florida is putting together a class action suit against Varrick. All Finley & Figg have to do is find a handful of people who had a heart attack while taking Krayoxx, convince them to become clients, join the class action, and ride along to fame and fortune. With any luck, they won't even have to enter a courtroom!
It almost seems too good to be true.
And it is.

John Grisham is the author of twenty-three novels, one work of non-fiction, and one collection of short stories. His works are translated into thirty-eight languages. He lives in Virginia and Mississippi.

John Harvey A Darker Shade of Blue [Kindle Edition] Pbk published November 2011 by Cornerstone Digital at £4.55 ISBN: B0051UTQCW

John Harvey has been described as the master of British crime and in A Darker Shade of Blue he has collected together some of his very best writing.
From the killing fields of the East Midlands to the mean streets of London, from the jazz clubs and clip joints of Soho to the barren fenlands of East Anglia, this is a world of broken families and run-down estates, revenge killings and prostitution, drugs, guns and corruption; a world of overstretched police forces and underpaid detectives, men and women who strive nonetheless for a kind of justice; a world in which everything, even friendship, has a price.
Featuring characters like Frank Elder, who tried to turn his back on police work and failed; Jack Kiley, ex-copper and one-time professional footballer, now a London-based PI; and the renowned jazz loving and much-loved Detective Inspector Charlie Resnick, John Harvey's finely-crafted vignettes perfectly encapsulate life in the badlands of modern Britain.

John Harvey is the author of the richly praised Charlie Resnick novels, the first of which, Lonely Hearts, was named by The Times as one of the '100 Best Crime Novels of the Century'. His first novel featuring Detective Inspector Frank Elder, Flesh and Blood, won the CWA Silver Dagger in 2004, and a Barry Award for the Best British Crime Novel published in the US in 2004. The bone-chilling cold, the grim sparseness of the meals, the embittered meanness of old Mr Partington: but for the kindness shown by his son, her spirit must surely have been crushed.

Peter Hodges Jack the Ripper - Through the Mists of Time [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Pneuma Springs Publishing at £5.73 ISBN: B005L384UY

Over a century ago a series of shocking mutilation murders took place in a squalid, overcrowded district of Victorian London. Five women fell victim to a man driven by rage and violent fantasy. The newspapers of the day gave him a chilling nickname, a name that evokes images of gas-lit foggy streets and a top-hatted sinister figure carrying a Gladstone bag. From the outset, the murderer attained almost mythical status merely by virtue of his name and his uncanny ability to avoid detection. The legend of Jack the Ripper was born. Peter Hodgson's detailed and entertaining overview of Ripper lore in fact, film and fiction analyses the fiend's awesome legacy. He explores the institutions and the individuals: the Jewish community and their rituals with meat, the scandal-prone royal family, the Victorian police and their simplistic methods of investigation, the streetwalkers and their trade. This book compares the fiction with the reality of those ghastly events, and clearly shows how the real killer has been transformed into a creature of the mind-the 'other' Jack the Ripper. Examination of the victims' mutilations reveals the true nature of 'Jack's' grotesque fantasies. This aspect-coupled with his elementary anatomical knowledge-is used in conjunction with the FBI's appraisal of the case to construct a unique psychological profile. From the long list of candidates the author reveals his prime suspect for the role of the world's most infamous serial killer.

Anthony Horowitz The House of Silk: The New Sherlock Holmes Novel [Kindle Edition] Pbk published November 2011 by Orion at £9.99 ISBN: B005I5482S

The first official new Sherlock Holmes mystery, written by global bestseller Anthony Horowitz.
Bestselling novelist and Holmes expert Anthony Horowitz will bring the great man to life again for a new generation of readers. As the creator of Foyle, recently voted the nation's favourite TV detective at the ITV Crime Thriller Awards 2010, Anthony has already displayed his talent for plotting and characterisation. Having been a lifelong fan of Conan Doyle's novels, he was the perfect choice to return to the original stories and create a new mystery for Holmes and Watson. Interest in Holmes has never been higher than right now. A blockbusting movie adaptation has coincided with the BBC's intriguing modern update and both successes are to be repeated this autumn. Horowitz says: 'I fell in love with the Sherlock Holmes stories when I was 16 and I've read them many times since. My aim is to produce a first-rate mystery for a modern audience while remaining absolutely true to the spirit of the original.'

Anthony Horowitz may have committed more (fictional) murders than any other living author. As a TV screenwriter he created both MIDSOMER MURDERS and the BAFTA-winning FOYLE'S WAR. Other TV work includes POIROT and the widely acclaimed mini-series COLLISION and INJUSTICE. He is also the author of a string of bestselling children's books, including the Alex Rider series which has sold 13 million copies worldwide. He has often claimed Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to be an inspiration for his work ever since encountering the Holmes canon, aged sixteen. He currently lives in Clerkenwell.

Hartley Howard Bowman Strikes Again: A Mystery Novel [Kindle Edition] Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35 ISBN: B005O7VKDA

There was poison in the glass-and it was the detective in the case who drank it! But for the attentions of a conscientious drug-store attendant there would have been one dark handsome stranger the less to spend his free time on blondes!
Glenn Bowman had been asked by District Attorney Eric Webster to find his eighteen year old son, who had vanished after being jailed for twenty eight days for dangerous driving. Webster was up for re-election and could not afford a scandal, so Bowman's investigations in the Los Angeles district had to be secret. The attempt on his life proved that they were not.
Before Bowman solves Paul Webster's disappearance, and links it up with a particularly vicious racket, more deadly events occur. Dynamic action on the part of Bowman is called for and he rises to the occasion in a fast-moving story which Hartley Howard handles superbly.
