Rosie Todmarsh [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury at £5.35
ISBN: B005O7QBEI
Rosie took herself off to the pub. She had to escape from the supercilious highbrows on whom she was billeted. To them she was "common," middle-aged and homeless. She knew that, but nevertheless she was happy. She still had her memories and she still had young Joe, her Air Force officer son.
Rosie's childhood was spent in the carefree atmosphere of the theatre, with Dad (a Comedian) as hero. She had a bad time after his death with her mother's melancholia and the contempt of her sister (who had successfully snared a peer as a husband). After that came the best years of her life-her marriage with old Joe, landlord of the Crown, a big boisterous fellow, but the most gentle, unselfish husband any woman could imagine. The last war ended their happiness. Old Joe was killed; their son was born soon after.
From that moment nobody and nothing mattered except young Joe. She was dead set on making a gent of him. She skimped her little luxuries to send him to a "posh" school. What wonder that they gradually grew apart, that he seemed to prefer "high life" and a chromium-plated flat to his homely mother and the old-fashioned Crown? Then came the second war and his enlistment in the Air Force.
Rosie sat in the pub thinking how her life had changed; bombed out of the Crown, her livelihood gone, an unwanted evacuee. But everything was all right, for young Joe would come on leave. The war and the R.A.F. had brought him back to her.

ISBN: B005OW29IA
Waking up in hospital, Edson Taylor struggles to recall how he has gotten there. He s told that he s been assaulted and forcibly anaesthetised. Panic turns to horror; although unconscious, Ed s estranged father suffered a gruesome attack resulting in his death. When his fiance disappears, Ed follows her trail into Los Angeles violent underworld, and becomes entangled in a deadly game of cat and mouse between the FBI and an infamous crime boss. Wondering why he s been targeted, Ed must confront the past, and the conspiracies and betrayal surrounding the present. But who can he trust?
John Baird hasn't always been a writer, he has worked as a teacher in Physical Education. At school, he used to struggle to write and his spelling was, self-admittedly, atrocious. But on changing his diet to fish rather than red meat, his writing soared. He writes commercial fiction, knowing that it is more suspenseful than cerebral. He doesn t claim to be a literary writer, and as John says, some books are like taking a Venetian Gondola, mine are like taking the big dipper at Blackpool. John Baird lives in Nottingham with his wife and dog. He lives at home looking after his wife who suffers from panic attacks. With time to read and write, he devoured crime thrillers: All of them, good and bad, have in some way inspired Chasing Shadows.

London's Curse: Murder, Black Magic & Tutankhamun [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published November 2011 by The History Press at £15.38
ISBN: B0060GR41Q
The first book to examine the bizarre sequence of deaths--all attributed to the "Curse of Tutankhamun"--that occurred in London's 1920s West End
Throughout the 1920 and 1930s, London was gripped by the supposed curse of Tutankhamun, the Egyptian boy-king of antiquity, whose tomb was uncovered in 1923. Over the next few years more than 20 of those involved in the tomb's exhumation perished in strange, often terrifying circumstances, prompting the myth of the curse. With a blend of meticulous research and educated conjecture, historian Mark Beynon explores the strange circumstances surrounding a brutal murder at the Savoy Hotel, sinister happenings at Mayfair's Bath Club, a mysterious suicide at St. James's Court, and a series of inexplicable deaths linked to the British Museum, and uncovers a wealth of hitherto unpublished material that lays bare the truth behind these fatalities. Set against the backdrop of London's glittering 1920s and 30s, the author delves deep into the murky underworld of a morally corrupt and decadent city, and uncovers evidence that these deaths were not only linked by the ominous presence of Tutankhamum himself, but also by a murderer hell-bent on retribution and dubbed by the press as "The Most Wickedest Man in the World."

Frank Føns is a very successful crime writer. His novels, famed for their visceral descriptions of violent death, have made him a household name. But now someone is copying his crimes. City of Sins [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Harper at £2.99
ISBN: B005HIJTES
The pulse-pounding new thriller featuring FBI agent Franco Patrese, in New Orleans on the hunt for a warped serial killer as Hurricane Katrina threatens the city.
The first one was found with a rattlesnake in place of her missing left leg, and a mirror smashed into her forehead by an axe blade. Strange… but even stranger that she'd just told new FBI agent Franco Patrese she wanted to uncover a conspiracy as disgusting as it is unthinkable.
In the sledgehammer heat of a New Orleans summer, the leads – and the bodies – pile up thick and fast for Patrese and NOPD homicide detective Selma Fawcett. They're inescapably drawn into an underworld murky even by the standards of the Big Sleazy.
The case is wide open. What is the part played by St John Varden, the city's richest man, or of his son Victor, head of a high-end mercenary company? There's even a suspect far closer to home in the shape of Luther Marcq, Selma's ex-husband, who was dishonourably discharged from the military after the atrocities at Abu Ghraib. And, of course, there's Marie Laveau, the underworld boss and self-styled Voodoo Queen.
As they try to piece together the connections between the seediest players on the city's stage, only two things remain certain – there are huge secrets hidden in these cesspools of corruption and crime, and some people will do anything to keep them that way.
And all the while, the city's apocalypse looms. Her name is Katrina, and she's taking aim…
Daniel Blake worked as a reporter on the Sun and the Daily Telegraph and then for Control Risk, a company which specialises in kidnap negotiation, clandestine investigations and political risk analysis. He was also one of the youngest-ever contestants on Mastermind. Daniel studied at Cambridge and currently lives in London.

In Bourne’s first novel, we see a serial killer thriller combined with a delicious religious conspiracy theory, when a pimp is found dead in a rough New York neighbourhood. A far-right extremist is fatally shot at his remote log cabin outside Seattle. An eighteen-year-old computer hacker is murdered on his way home from a call centre in India. One thing unites these victims. All had, at some point in their largely wasted and grubby lives, performed an act of exceptional goodness. Someone is murdering good people. Why?For rookie journalist Will Monroe, this is the launch pad for a glittering career. But then his wife Beth is kidnapped, and the riddle becomes personal.
In The Last Testament, meanwhile, as the Baghdad Museum of Antiquities is looted, a teenage Iraqi boy finds an ancient clay tablet in a long-forgotten vault. He takes it and runs off into the night …Years later, at a peace rally in Jerusalem, the Israeli prime minister is about to sign a historic deal with the Palestinians. A man approaches from the crowd and seems to reach for a gun – bodyguards shoot him dead. In his hand was a note, one he wanted to hand to the prime minister. The shooting sparks a series of tit-for-tat killings which could derail the peace accord…
In The Final Reckoning, Tom Byrne has fallen from grace since his days as an idealistic young lawyer in New York. Now he'll work for anyone – as long as the money's right. So when the United Nations call him in to do their dirty work, he accepts the job without hesitation. A suspected suicide bomber shot by UN security staff has turned out to be a harmless old man: Tom must placate the family and limit their claims for compensation. In London, Tom learns that the dead man was not quite the innocent he seemed, unravelling details of a unique, hidden brotherhood, united in a mission that has spanned the world and caused hundreds of unexplained deaths.

Blood Trail (Joe Pickett) [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published November 2011 by Corvus at £3.19
ISBN: B005GOBIN8
It's elk season in the Rockies, but this year one hunter is stalking a different kind of prey. When the call comes in on the radio, Joe Pickett can hardly believe his ears: game wardens have found a hunter dead at a camp in the mountains - strung up, gutted, skinned, and beheaded, as if he were the elk he'd been pursuing. A spent cartridge and a poker chip lie next to his body. Ripples of horror spread through the community, and with a possibly psychotic killer on the loose, Governor Rulon is forced to end hunting season early for the first time in state history - outraging hunters and potentially crippling the state's income from the loss of hunting license revenue. But when the brutal murders eerily coincide with the arrival of radical anti-hunting activist Klamath Moore, Pickett knows the Governor's ruling is the least of his worries. Are the murders the work of a deranged activist or of a lone psychopath with a personal vendetta? As always, Joe Pickett is the governor's go-to man, and he's put on the case to track the murderous hunter, as more bodies - and poker chips - turn up.

John Boyne
Crippen [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Transworld Digital at £6.39
ISBN: B005L193X8
Crippen is a novel based on the real-life story and amazing escape of the notorious
killer Dr Hawley Crippen who, in 1910, fled England to escape capture by the police.
When the headless body of his wife Cora was found buried in the cellar of his house
in London, a full-scale manhunt was launched to find him and his mistress Ethel
LeNeve. Fleeing London, and disguising themselves as father and son, they set sail
on a two-week voyage to Quebec. Had it not been for the quick thinking of Captain
Kendall aboard the SS Montrose, who suspected that the passengers Mr Robinson and
his `son' Edmund weren't all they pretended to be, they might have got away with it.
But, using the newly installed Marconi Telegraph on board to alert Scotland Yard, the
captain made history by ensuring that Dr Crippen was the first killer to be captured in
this way. By the time the boat reached its destination in Canada, Inspector Drew was
there to arrest him and the chase was over.
Common perception seems to have placed Dr Crippen as a vicious serial killer - The
Chamber of Horrors at Madame Tussauds even has a waxwork of him - and yet the
truth is that he `only' killed one person, his wife Cora. While many of the characters
and situations in this book are taken from the facts of the case - Inspector Drew did
chase `Mr Robinson' and `Edmund' across the ocean; Louise Smythson really was the
first person to suspect foul play; Captain Kendall really did discover the truth about
the `father' and `son' by chance - but many others have been created by John Boyne
to serve the plot.
The Crippen that John Boyne has depicted is obviously very different from the one we
have been encouraged to accept over the years. But then this book is a novel, and the
events of the night on which Cora Crippen met her bloody end are entirel_v a
supposition on the part of the author....
John Boyne was born in Dublin in 1971. He studied at Trinity College. Dublin, and
the University of East Anglia, where he completed the course in creative writing. At
UFA he was awarded the Curtis Brown prize. His first short story was published in
the Sunday Tribune and was subsequently shortlisted for a Hennessy Literary Award.
FIe is also the author of The Thief of Time and The Congress of Rough Riders (a novel
about Buffalo Bill). The character of Matthieu Zela appears in all his novels.

The Malady in Maderia [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35
ISBN: B005O7VFSA
The last thing recently widowed Julia Probyn expects to find on the lush and charming island of Madeira is a clue to her husband's mysterious death, for Colonel Jamieson perished somewhere in the wilds of Central Asia while on a top-secret mission for British Intelligence. No sooner does Julia arrive at Madeira with her infant son and his devoted Nanny, however, than a series of strange, sinister, but apparently unconnected events begins thrusting itself upon her.
Displaying her usual intuitive flair for deduction, Julia soon concludes that, for some reason, the Russians are experimenting with a powerful new chemical on Madeira's wild sheep. But why? And why was she told that her husband died "because he went out without wearing his respirator"?
A small Madeiran peasant boy shows the same lethargic symptoms as the sheep, and-Julia suddenly realizes-as her husband had himself displayed shortly before walking into a Soviet ambush half a world away. Has she stumbled upon a testing ground for nerve gas in Madeira? And is that what her husband's last mission was all about? Keeping a firm grip on her nerves and her imagination, Julia forces herself to learn the exact and painful details surrounding the abortive mission and her husband's death.
Once in possession of the few tenuous facts that anyone in London knows and can tell about Colonel Jamieson's death, Julia summons her cousin, Colin Monro, to Madeira and, together, they blow the entire Russian plot wide open. Here is high adventure interwoven with all the sights, sounds and scenes of fecund Madeira in a story as exotic and spellbinding as Ann Bridge's many readers have come to expect from her gifted pen.

Ann Bridge
Emergency in the Pyrenees [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35
ISBN: B005O7VG70
Philip Jamieson, husband of Julia (who has appeared in earlier Ann Bridge stories as the enchanting Miss Probyn) decides that she shall go to his house in the Pyrenees while he himself has to be in the Middle East on a special mission, as they are expecting their first child. It is a very male decision: the village is remote, with few facilities. In fact it proves to be most unsuitable and inconvenient.
Fortunately, Julia is succoured by efficient and attentive neighbours. There are, for instance, Nick and Dick, the twin sons of Lord and Lady Heriot, who live at Pau: there is also Bonne-court, climber, guide and hunter (who is not averse to conducting far more secret business). Above all Julia secures the companionship of the 'angelic Luzia', daughter of the Duke of Ericeira; who is among Ann Bridge's best creations.
The 'emergency' proves to be of a double nature - one of espionage as well as of domestic crisis, and the reader is firmly held in the grip of the intricate and exciting plot, in which a romantic theme is also interwoven.
Ann Bridge is a writer whose characters never fail to spring to life, and her understanding of peoples of many nations is allied with a strong, convincing narrative. The mood of her book is one of sunlight and happiness, in contrast to the squalor and disenchantment of so much modern fiction.

A Lighthearted Quest [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35
ISBN: B005O7VHZQ
When Julia undertook to find her cousin, Colin Munro, last heard of sailing a yacht off the north coast of Africa, the quest seemed lighthearted enough. But, before she had finished, she was involved with Moorish antique dealers, a Belgian woman archaeologist, Purcell, the enigmatic barkeeper, and American airman, the saurian Mr. St. John, and numerous other characters charming or sinister. Julia's search takes her a cargo-boart to Casablanca, and thence to Tangier, Fez and Marrakech. Her 'dumb-blonde' beauty, camouflaging a lively intelligence, gets her through unexpected difficulties and dangers. Colin is found, and the mysterious reason for his disappearance at last revealed…
The first in a series of eight Julia Probyn novels, The Lighthearted Quest displays a blend of humour and adventure which transports us to exotic places and introduces us to entertaining people, but also throws a good deal of light on the explosive political issues that French Morocco encountered in the 50s.

Naked to the Grave [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35
ISBN: B005O7VGNE
When insurance assessor John Piper calls at the Daveys' flat in Hampstead, he has no idea that his visit will turn out to be anything but an ordinary professional appointment. But it would seem that someone else had already visited Flat 2A that Saturday afternoon…
Shortly after Piper's arrival, Pauline Davey is found brutally stabbed, apparently during her afternoon nap. The bloody scissors on her pillow hint at what has happened even before the covers are pulled back to reveal the once lovely body, horribly mutilated.
All the evidence points to murder and the police are looking hard at Julian Davey. Piper and his friend, crime reporter Quinn, begin poking around, and in the process Davey's alibi is shot full of holes. Persisting in their inquiries, the two men soon uncover an adulterous love triangle among neighbors, a group of Pauline's wealthy friends with a penchant for gambling, and a general unwillingness by all concerned to answer any questions. The actions of Piper and Quinn apparently make the murderer uncomfortable, for more deaths follow as they come closer to discovering the truth. Soon Piper and Quinn are off again with a new set of problems, too many suspects with too many possible motives, and a dangerous killer on the loose who will stop at nothing to prevent the discovery of his identity.

The Quiet Woman [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35
ISBN: B005OY9DPK
The Quiet Woman begins when two people conspire to steal a fortune in cash. It ends in double murder. The payroll of the Jauncey Engineering plant is missing. According to the guard, found bound and gagged at the scene, two trusted employees, Harold Graham and Yvonne Marshall, are responsible for the crime, and the police proceed as if this were just another payroll theft.
To crime reporter Quinn it sounds like the usual story of a married man and a younger woman who plot to steal the money in order to finance a new life together. He and his friend, insurance assessor Piper, question the missing woman's husband and the missing man's wife and her sister. Soon they are patching scattered clues together, and Quinn sets out to investigate the possibility that Yvonne may have already double-crossed Harold.
Then the first corpse is discovered. All clues point in the same direction, but when the second body is found in a watery ditch, that theory must also be discarded. Another hypothesis is then proposed and painstakingly investigated. It, too, turns into a blind alley. A third cul-de-sac, equally convincing and just as false, makes the action by turns frustrating or suspenseful, but always gripping. And Quinn, who wanted only a human-interest angle for his column, becomes more and more intimately involved in the case.
A telephone call from the police provides him with further evidence and leads Quinn reluctantly but inevitably to the conclusion of this fast-paced novel. The Quiet Woman is a story of ordinary people engulfed in frightening events. It will challenge even the most astute.

Absolute Friends [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published November 2011 by Sceptre at £4.99
ISBN: B002V092KQ
Absolute Friends is a superbly paced novel spanning fifty-six years, a theatrical masterstroke of tragi-comic writing, and a savage fable of our times, almost of our hours.
The friends of the title are Ted Mundy, British soldier’s son born in 1947 in a shining new independent Pakistan, and Sasha, a refugee son of an East German Lutheran pastor and his wife who have sought sanctuary in the West.
The two men meet first as students in riot-torn West Berlin of the late Sixties, again in the grimy looking-glass of Cold War espionage and, most terribly, in today’s unipolar world of terror, counter-terror and the war of lies.
Absolute Friends presents us with magical writing, characters to delight, and a spellbinding story that enchants even as it challenges.
John le Carré was born in 1931. His third novel, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, secured him a wide reputation, which was consolidated by the acclaim for his trilogy, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy and Smiley's People. His recent novels include The Tailor of Panama, Single & Single (for which he was described as ‘the essential voice of our time' by the Daily Telegraph)and The Constant Gardener. Absolute Friends is his nineteenth novel.

When Smiley finds Circus head Maston is trying to blame him for the man's death, he begins his own investigation, meeting with Fennan's widow to find out what could have led him to such desperation. But on the very day that Smiley is ordered off the enquiry he receives an urgent letter from the dead man. Philip Marlowe's on a case: his client, a dried-up husk of a woman, wants him to recover a rare gold coin called a Brasher Doubloon, missing from her late husband's collection. ISBN: B005IQ67BW
'So you see, my dear little goose, there's no need to plan revenge on those horrible men-at-arms as I'm sure you would like to because the angels will do it for you. That is their law. And none can escape their terrible punishment." Summer, 1384. The sun is hot and high, promising a fine harvest - but storm-clouds of insurrection are gathering over England. Lollard heretics, driven from their base at Oxford by the iron fist of the Archbishop Courtenay, now roam the land sowing sedition and a return to the bloodshed that swept over the country during the Great Rebellion seems certain. In the capital, the boy king Richard II is now seventeen; his uncle John of Gaunt still refuses to step aside for his ward. Hildegard of Meaux - sleuth, spy and now an abbess of the powerful Cistercian order - has found refuge from a world of violence and blood-feud at her new house in Yorkshire. But by taking a bonded maid into the fold, Hildegard has made a dangerous enemy, an enemy who thinks nothing of destroying her little sanctuary to further his own ends. Meanwhile her own history, and her possession of a priceless relic, threatens to drag her into the schemes of traitors to the crown who seek to overthrow King Richard's regime - including the ruthless Henry Bolingbroke. And with portents in York that the end of days is imminent; signs expressed by death in fire, can even the resourceful Hildegard unweave the tangled skein of conspiracy? Ted Conover
Newjack [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published November 2011 by Ebury Digital at £5.04
ISBN: B005OYF3K4
A gripping true account of life on the inside of Sing Sing prison
After he was denied access to report on Sing Sing, one of America’s most notorious high security jails, journalist Ted Conover applied to become a prison guard. As a rookie officer, or ‘newjack’, Conover spent a year in the unpredictable, intimidating and often violent world of America’s penal system.
Unarmed and outnumbered, prison officers at one of America’s toughest maximum security jails supervise 1,800 inmates, most of whom have been convicted of violent felonies: murder, manslaughter, rape. Prisoners conceal makeshift weapons to settle gang rivalries or old grudges, and officers are often attacked or caught in the crossfire. When violence flares up in the galleries or yard an officer’s day can go from mundane to terrifying in a heartbeat.
>NR>
Conover is an acclaimed journalist, known for immersing himself completely in a situation in order to write about it. With remarkable insight, Newjack takes the reader as close to experiencing life in an American prison as any of us would ever want to get. It’s a thrillingly told account of how the gruelling world of the prison system brutalizes all who enter it – prison guards and prisoners alike.
Ted Conover is a writer best known for his participatory investigations: riding the rails with tramps, traveling with the Mexican undocumented, and working at Sing Sing prison. Two of his previous books, Whiteout and Coyotes, were named Notable Books of the Year by The New York Times. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Guardian, and many other publications. He teaches at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University. Holy Disorders [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published November 2011 by Vintage Digital at £5.69
ISBN: B005VQFOPY
Who crushed to death a cathedral organist who didn't have an enemy in the world? Only Gervase Fen can track down the murderer in this witty and surreal whodunnit
Holy Disorders takes Oxford don and part time detective Gervase Fen to the town of Tolnbridge where he is happily bounding around with a butterfly net until the cathedral organist is murdered giving Fen the chance to play sleuth. The man didn't have an enemy in the world and even his music was inoffensive: could he have fallen foul of a nest of German spies or of the local coven of witches ominously rumored to have been practicing since the 17th century? Tracking down the answer pleases Fen immensely--only the reader will have a better time.
Edmund Crispin was the pseudonym of Bruce Montgomery, an English crime writer and composer. He graduated from St John's College, Oxford, in 1943, with a BA in modern languages, having for two years been its organist and choirmaster. From 1943 to 1945 he taught at Shrewsbury School and in 1944 published the first of nine Gervase Fen novels, The Case of the Gilded Fly. He became a well respected reviewer of crime, writing for the Sunday Times from 1967 until his death in 1978.

Rupert Croft-Cooke
Thief [Kindle Edition]
Pbk published October 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader at £5.35
ISBN: B005OY9198
'If they've got any sense they'll leave the boy with Alicia Robbins.' But they didn't. They (the Juvenile Court, that is) took Gerry Lovell away from the old spinster who had taken him in ad cared for him so passionately and they had packed him off to an Approved School.
Gerry had always been 'the one who was different': even as a boy he found crime only an excitement, not a moral wrong. Perhaps he could have been rescued from this but he wasn't. From the moment he entered the Approved School his way forward was mapped out: robbery and deception, crime taken like a drug, until at last, as the henchman of the underworld mogul Graham Bond, he was prepared to risk everything - the happiness of a young wife and child, a promising career, the loyalty of the old woman who had stood by him through everything - to throw them all as stake just 'for kicks'.
Through a series of incidents more tense than any ordinary thriller Thief moves rapidly towards a climax of violent excitement. There are scenes in it written with a moment-by-moment intensity of suspense that those who saw the film Rififi will have some idea of. There is a brilliant picture of how the underworld works and there is, too, a warmth and human understanding that will make this novel remembered long after it is laid down.
Rupert Croft-Cooke, of whom Sir Compton Mackenzie has said 'no contemporary novelist has offered us so many readable books' here gives yet another proof of his remarkable versatility.
