Ben Aaronovitch Rivers of London [Kindle Edition] Pbk published July 2012 by Gollancz at £4.99 ISBN: B004K1EC1S

My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (and as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May. Then one night, in pursuance of a murder inquiry, I tried to take a witness statement from someone who was dead but disturbingly voluable, and that brought me to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, the last wizard in England. Now I'm a Detective Constable and a trainee wizard, the first apprentice in fifty years, and my world has become somewhat more complicated: nests of vampires in Purley, negotiating a truce between the warring god and goddess of the Thames, and digging up graves in Covent Garden . . . and there's something festering at the heart of the city I love, a malicious vengeful spirit that takes ordinary Londoners and twists them into grotesque mannequins to act out its drama of violence and despair. The spirit of riot and rebellion has awakened in the city, and it's falling to me to bring order out of chaos - or die trying.

Ben Aaronovitch was born and raised in London and all his work has reflected his abiding fascination and love for what he modestly likes to refer to as the 'Capital of the World'. He works as a bookseller when he is not writing novels and TV scripts.

A deeply unsettling tale of manipulation and terror. A new, modern-day novelisation of the classic Hammer film, Hands of the Ripper.

He is raising the poker again and Anna bites her lower lip so hard she chokes a little in the blood that runs down her throat...

And all too soon John realises he's made a terrible mistake...

The author of the novels The World House and its sequel Restoration, Guy Adams gave up acting five years ago to become a full-time writer. This was silly, but thankfully he's kept busy, writing bestselling humour titles based on TV show Life on Mars or Torchwood novels The House That Jack Built and The Men Who Sold The World. He has also written a pair of original Sherlock Holmes novels, The Breath of God and The Army of Doctor Moreau as well as a biography of actor Leonard Rossiter and an updated version of Neil Gaiman's Don't Panic: Douglas Adams & The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He is also the author of Kronos, a novelisation of the classic Hammer film, Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter.

Wajdi al-Ahdal A Land Without Jasmine [Kindle Edition] Pbk published September 2012 by Garnet Publishing at £5.14 ISBN: B008S0DPCY

A Land without Jasmine is a sexy, satirical detective story about the sudden disappearance of a young female student from Yemen's Sanaa University. Each chapter is narrated by a different character beginning with Jasmine herself. The mystery surrounding her disappearance comes into clearer focus with each self-serving and idiosyncratic account provided by an acquaintance, family member, or detective. As the details surrounding her sudden disappearance emerge the mystery deepens. Sexual depravity, honour, obsession; the motives are numerous and the suspects plentiful. It seems that everyone wants a piece of the charming young student. Family, friends, fellow students and nosey neighbours are quick to make their own judgements on the case, but the truth may be far stranger than anyone anticipates. This short novel has echoes of both the Sherlock Holmes stories and The Catcher in the Rye, as in addition to the mystery and a murder, the novel contains candid discussions of coming of age in a land of sexual repression. Wajdi al-Ahdal is a satirical author with a fresh and provocative voice and an excellent eye for telling the details of his world.

Wajdi al-Ahdal is a Yemeni novelist, author of short stories, screenwriter and dramatist. Born in 1973, he received a degree in literature from Sanaa University. He won the Afif prize for the short story in 1997, a gold medal for a dramatic text in the Festival for Arab Youth in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1998, and the youth prize of the President of the Republic of Yemen for a short story in 1999. He is currently employed in Dar al-Kutub, the National Library in Sanaa.

Kingsley Amis The Riverside Villas Murder (Penguin Modern Classics) [Kindle Edition] Pbk published July 2012 by Penguin at £5.49 ISBN: B007TB5PTO

A mummy is stolen from a small town museum along with some Roman coins and a soaking wet man collapses in fourteen year old Peter Furneaux's living room bleeding from the head. What was a suspected student prank is followed by murder. At first it is impossible to see the connection, but the eccentric Colonel Manton does. With Peter's help the Colonel unravels a mystery that strikes fear into the heart of a genteel suburban neighbourhood and gives Peter rather more excitement than he bargained for at the tennis club social. This meticulously paced thriller shows Amis at his most subtle and daring.

Kingsley Amis's (1922-95) works take a humorous yet highly critical look at British society, especially in the period following the end of World War II. Born in London, Amis explored his disillusionment in novels such as That Uncertain Feeling (1955). His other works include The Green Man (1970), Stanley and the Women (1984), and The Old Devils (1986), which won the Booker Prize. Amis also wrote poetry, criticism, and short stories.

Ace Atkins Robert B. Parker's Lullaby (Spenser Novel) [Kindle Edition] Pbk published September 2012 by Quercus at £8.54 ISBN: B0089XJU9C

Fourteen-year-old Mattie Sullivan has approached Spenser for help, asking him to find her mother's killer. But her mother, Julie Sullivan, was killed some four years back; and a local man, Mickey Green, was convicted of her murder that very same year. Mattie is, by all appearances, an emotionally damaged kid. But she's also gruff, street-smart and fearless - qualities close to Spenser's heart. As such, he agrees to look into Mickey Green's case: figuring the least he can do is force Mattie to face the facts, and put an end to her denial. But Mattie's instincts are correct. And soon Spenser realizes that it's not her, but the record on her mother's killing, which needs to be set straight.

Ace Atkins is the author of eleven novels, including The Ranger, which was nominated for the 2012 Edgar Award for Best Novel. Robert B. Parker was the author of seventy books, including the legendary Spenser detective series, the Jesse Stone novels, the acclaimed Virgil Cole / Everett Hitch westerns, and the Sunny Randall novels. Winner of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award and long considered the undisputed dean of American crime fiction, he died in January 2010.

David Barrie Hard-Hearted [Kindle Edition] Pbk published July 2012 by John Law Media at £2.99 ISBN: B007Z5PS3C

None of it makes any sense.
A savage attack in the city's most elegant neighbourhood. A Sorbonne professor dating a hedge fund manager. A state-backed bank conspiring to promote false arrests. A serial seductress who'll lie about everything, but not about love. A millionaire trader who sleeps in flea-ridden hotels. A woman in a haute couture dress who'd rather have an eighteenth-century book than a Cartier bracelet. A murder suspect given to speculating about his own guilt.
Franck Guerin of the Brigade Criminelle has a dead woman on his hands, slain minutes after she walked out on her lover. And a nagging suspicion that he'll never solve the crime until he learns to read the hearts of those whose lives touched hers.
Which is a lot to ask of a man who has a hard job deciphering his own.
The fourth Franck Guerin novel from
David Barrie demonstrates once more the author's firm grasp on the concept of noir chic.

I live in Paris, and have done so for almost half of my life. Fond though I am of the country (Scotland) and city (Glasgow) in which I was born and raised, I must admit I'm very happy to have found my way to Paris and to have sunk my roots here. Writing (or rather seeking to have what I have written published) is something to which I've only recently turned. I therefore have a day job, working as a management consultant (not the most glorious of professions, I grant you, but one which offers many delights to the curious). I write first and foremost because I like telling stories. I also do it because it reminds me just how tough and unforgiving it is trying to hammer out a tale that's worth reading - which, in turn, makes me a more appreciative (and probably more tolerant) reader. I write crime fiction because it's a genre that has never turned its back on the simple pleasures of colourful…

John Behardien Dawn Over Vancouver [Kindle Edition] Pbk published August 2012 by Duncurin Publishing at £2.04 ISBN: B008RPH4M2

SECRETS: Who needs them and who wants them? More than we might suppose.
Read about one of the largest Medical Centres in the country on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal where it seems just about everyone has a secret. The trick, as some have already found out, is to protect one's own, whilst using any means to discover another's.
Some will go to any lengths in order to uncover what others are desperate to protect, and then to use this information to fuel their lust for money, for power - or just to get even.
One person has a secret of far greater significance than all others, and this person remains anonymous whilst their true identity remains hidden, allowing them to covertly assist those, who find themselves in dire circumstances, just when they are most in need. Unfortunately, they've underestimated what depths others are prepared to plumb, and it comes down to a simple, but heart-breaking choice: say nothing and disappear, or reveal themselves and unwittingly gain knowledge of the ultimate secret - just what, are the things that are even worse than death?
" When asked later, nobody present that day would ever have believed they could be more shocked in their lives, but one more revelation, one that was as momentous as it was unexpected, awaited them, while they hung on in that withering environment, with each second holding more and more distress and despair for the poor man, who was now sobbing with grief at the thought of his wife being harmed in this way."

Jim Butcher Ghost Story: A Dresden Files Novel [Kindle Edition] Pbk published August 2012 by Hachette Digital at £6.99 ISBN: B0057MLQWW

Meet Harry Dresden, Chicago's first (and only) Wizard PI. Turns out the 'everyday' world is full of strange and magical things - and most of them don't play well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. But he's forgotten his own golden rule: magic - it can get a guy killed. Which didn't help when he clashed with unknown assailants with his murder in mind. And though Harry's continued existence is now in some doubt, this doesn't mean he can rest in peace. Trapped in a realm that's not quite here, yet not quite anywhere else, Harry learns that three of his loved ones are in danger. Only by discovering his assailant's identity can he save his friends, bring criminal elements to justice, and move on himself. It would just be easier if he knew who was at risk. And had a (working) crystal ball. And access to magic. Instead, he is unable to interact with the physical world - invisible to all but a select magical few. He's also not the only silent presence roaming Chicago's alleys. Hell, he put some there himself. Now, they're looking for payback.

Jim Butcher is a bestselling author and martial arts enthusiast. His resume includes a long list of skills rendered obsolete at least 200 years ago, and he turned to writing because anything else probably would have driven him insane. He lives with his family in Independence, Missouri.

Christian Cameron God of War: The Epic Story of Alexander the Great [Kindle Edition] Pbk published August 2012 by Orion at £9.99 ISBN: B006W2V0K4

As a boy, he dreamed of matching the heroic feats of Achilles. At eighteen he led the Macedonian cavalry to victory against the Greeks at Chaeronea.By twenty- five he had crushed the Persians in three monumental battles and was master of the greatest empire the world had ever seen.By the time he died, undefeated, in Babylon, at the age of thirty-two, he had far surpassed the exploits of his boyhood hero. There were no more worlds to conquer, and men called him a god. But behind the legend was another, less godlike story. The story of a man on an epic killing spree, driven by an unquenchable thirst for glory; who led an army on an extraordinary ten-year journey to the end of the known world, from northern Greece all the way to India, in pursuit of an impossible dream - to prove himself invincible, whatever the cost; who only stopped when his army refused to march any further, and then, furious that his insane ambitions had been thwarted, tried to destroy it. Narrated by his boyhood friend Ptolemy, this is the story of Alexander as you have never heard it before: raw, intimate, brutal - full of the terror and exhilaration of battle, the heroism and the horror of conquest, and, ultimately, the tragedy of a man who aimed to be more than human.

Christian Cameron is a writer and military historian. He is a veteran of the United States Navy where he served as both an aviator and an intelligence officer in the first Gulf War, Somalia, and elsewhere. He lives in Toronto with his wife and daughter, working on a Masters in Classics.
