Juan José Millas The Disorder Of Your Name Pbk published February 2000 by Allison Busby at £9.99 ISBN: 0749003596

Translated by Rod Usher

Julio Orgaz is a frustrated publishing executive who tries to convince himself that he is on the verge of writing a great novel. He falls in love with Laura, a bored urban wife and mother. As in all the novels by Millis - one of Spain's best-selling novelists - what is real and what is not is hard to pin down. Julio had another lover, Teresa, who died in a car accident - or did she? Did Teresa even exist? Not without reason is Julio seeing a psychiatrist twice a week - and Laura, who he meets after each session, happens to be married to one ...

Millás paints a dark portrait of urban ennui and ambition, laced with outbursts of torrid sex, finding fissures and failures in our perception of reality which he exploits with sarcasm, a dry almost-English humour and tenderness. Whilst The Disorder of Your Name is literary fiction of the highest order, its plot rattles along like a crime novel - and crime there is, a murder that looks to be perfect ...

Juan Jose Millás was born in Valencia in 1946. He studied philosophy and arts at university and now lives in Madrid where he teaches at the Madrid School of Fine Arts. He also writes a weekly column in the leading Spanish daily newspaper, El Pais. His twelve books have been translated into many languages, won various awards and sold in their hundreds of thousands throughout Europe.
