If you were an animal, what kind of animal would you be?'
Milla asks her best friend Gabriel.
When on a routine house visit Milla Hall - cat therapist - comes across the
skinny albino Purrl, she is instantly attracted. There's something about the cat
that's different.
It doesn't take long before Purrl arrives at Milla's back window, and is invited
to stay. Her boyfriend Josh doesn't like cats. He was willing to tolerate Milla's
own cat, but this is all getting too much and they argue frequently Then one
morning Josh walks out and leaves Milla, alone with Purrl - it's not even a week
before Milla's sense of the real world skews, and she becomes increasingly
obsessed with the albino. Memories of her twin sister come flooding back, and
guilt, lots of guilt. When Josh finally returns to collect his things she is almost
beginning to believe that she is a cat. She is hypersensitive, and in a seemingly
irrational fit of rage and fear, she kills him.
Is she possessed by Purrl or simply losing her mind? Only Gabriel, the one man
in love with her, can help. But will she turn on him in the same way she turned
on Josh? When he arrives at her house Milla feels her hair stand on end. if she
were only a cat ...
Inexorably the disturbing workings of Milla 's mind draws her into a strange world, and the unbelievable becomes reality. The shocking, horrifying conclusion is the only escape.
'Unexpectedly chilling ... I couldn't stroke my cat for a week.' Anna Maxted, author of Getting Over It
