Judith Cutler Staying Power Pbk published February 2000 by NEL at £5.99 ISBN: 0340707240

'The most imaginative and dashingly plotted of yet Cutler's novels. The Times

Staying Power is the second in a sharp and gripping new crime series featuring the indomitable Detective Sergeant Kate Power. Judith Cutler's new series is an authentic and engrossing examination of the contemporary police force - and life for women within it.
Flying home from Florence, DS Kate Power of Birmingham CID engages in a pleasant but trivial conversation with the businessman seated next to her. Two days later he's found hanging from a canal bridge - with Kate's card in his pocket as the only means of identification.
It look like a clear-cut case of suicide - but Kate isn't so sure. And, as her subsequent investigations prove, the cause of Alan Grafton's death - and its consequences - are more serious than she and her colleagues could ever have imagined.
Still regarded as a newcomer in the Birmingham police force, still battling against prejudice and intimidation among the ranks, still fighting to prove that she's got what it takes, Kate is determined to stick to her guns until she finally uncovers the shocking truth
Staying Power is the most riveting and satisfying of contemporary thrillers. With its memorable characters, this suspenseful and atmospheric novel races along engaging the reader from outset to conclusion. A must read.

Judith Cutler has always lived in or around Birmingham, the setting for her Sophie Rivers and Kate Powers crime novels. After many years of teaching in a big inner-city further education college, she's now a part-time lecturer in Creative Writing at Birmingham University. Her teaching work has recently taken her to such different locations as a maximum security prison and the Greek island of Skyros.
Judith is also Secretary of the Crime Writers' Association, an exciting job bringing her into contact with some of the country's leading novelists. Although she spends most of her time writing novels, from time to time she returns to her first love, short stories, many of which have won prizes or been broadcast. Published work includes:
Dying Fall 1995 Dying to Write 1996 Dying on Principle 1996 Dying for Millions 1997 Dying for Power 1998 Power on Her Own 1998 Staying Power 1999
Apart from being a passionate cook and keen gardener, her main interest is music; she is trustee of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra ("I'm the token woman!") and on the committee of the Birmingham Chamber Music Society.
She lives happily with her partner, Robert, and a houseful of teddy bears.
Her philosophy: today's world offers far too many opportunities for unscrupulous people to exploit the vulnerable. Thank goodness there are still some people prepared to tackle them.
