A serial killer is stalking the streets of LA - a violent deviant who murders and mutilates his victims in their own home, always striking at precisely eight o'clock. For world-weary detective Danny Talon this is the case that will surely end his career. He has three dead women, no suspects and a killer who has yet to leave a single clue.
Together with Dr Michael Rennick, a psychiatrist-lawyer on the faculty of UCLA, he tries to create a profile of the murderer. Michael meets Lisa Cleary, a woman haunted by waking nightmares of women being strangled, mutilated and murdered. Visions that are coming true.
Both Rennick and Talon are sceptical of Lisa's abilities but her visions describe the serial killer's crime scenes, the locations of the murder weapons - and details of a fourth murder yet to be committed. Now the detective, psychiatrist and reluctant visionary must join forces to find the killer. But Lisa's waking nightmares are growing more vivid, more precise, and much more frightening ...

In this new novel, Greg Rucka makes Bridgett Logan, whom we may have met but not necessarily liked in previous books, his heroine. Bridgett is nobody's sweetheart. A New York City private investigator with a powerful but estranged father, a nose ring, a Yankee cap, and a bad attitude, Bridgett Logan is actually doing better than ever before - especially compared to a past that involved heavy drugs. When Lisa, a fellow Bronx girl who hasn't escaped her past, is accused of murdering her abusive ex-dealer, Bridgett is compelled to find out the truth. But can she chase the demons away when she finds herself running for her life, fleeing from the pull of that seductive white powder - and running from a powerful man who wants her permanently out of the picture? Now, suddenly the woman who was nobody's darling has become the most wanted woman in town.

The difficulty lies in discovering who, among Guy's many enemies, hated him enough to want him dead - and who went on killing to conceal the truth. Could it be the vicar, secretly intrigued by the evil that men do? The best friend of Guy's wife Miranda? The crusty Wing Commander - or the too-good-to-be-true freelance computer whizz? There is certainly no shortage of suspects Even the ubiquitous Hetty Taplow, the village gossip, appears to know more than she'll admit...

Fifty-five-year-old Jim Lapsford makes an unusually healthy-looking corpse. A life-long devotee of vitamin pills and herbal remedies, it seems almost ironic that he has succumbed to a heart attack. But his GP is convinced that this is the case.
Trainee undertaker Drew Slocombe isn't so sure. An ex-nurse, Drew is convinced that there is enough conflicting medical evidence to merit a coroner's inquest at least. And then there's Jim's personal life: in addition to a long-suffering wife, two sons and a grieving terrier, Jim appears to have left behind a series of scorned mistresses.
But it seems everyone else is happy enough to accept the doctor's verdict. After four months unemployment, Drew Slocombe knows he's lucky to have a job - he shouldn't rock the boat. But can he really turn his back on murder? He had left nursing after the death of a patient, a patient he had lost because he had followed procedure rather than acting on instinct. Jim Lapsford may already be dead but surely he deserves to have his killer caught? Even so, Drew may have plenty of suspects but he has no proof. And Jim's cremation is just days away...
