Peter Moir Fotheringham Death of a Dusty Lady Published October 1999 by X Press at £16.99 ISBN: 0709065191

A respectable middle-aged lesbian archivist from a religious family is unlikely to commit suicide by riding her bike into the harbour naked from the waist down on a raw November night. It''s murder, but DI Smellie struggles to get a grip on the case.'

From the Author
Dusty Lady is the first Bill Smellie mystery.
The setting is an imaginary seaside town on the east coast of England. The main character is Inspector William Smellie, senior officer of the town's CID. And the first murder he has to deal with is weird. Elizabeth Pewtherer, the town's staid and religious and reputedly virgin archivist, appears to have died riding her bicycle into the harbour on a raw November night while naked from the waist down. Her body is recovered from the sea and the water in her lungs is fresh, not salt, and there are the marks of blows to the back of her head. It is murder. Smellie investigates and learns some surprising facts about the seemingly reclusive Miss Pewtherer: her lesbian lovers, for a start. But it is not until Smellie solves the seemingly inexplicable disappearance of a beautiful young woman that he is able to pinpoint the murderer of Elizabeth Pewtherer.
