Harry Turtledove
Settling Accounts: Return Engagement
What if the South had won the American Civil War? Harry Turtledove has imagined brilliantly what the consequences would have been from that initial victory in the 1860s through the Great War of the early twentieth century. And now - still bitter after the depression that followed that bloodbath - the Confederacy rises again to smite its enemies.
On June 22, 1941 Jake Featherston, the charismatic dictator of the resurgentConfederate States of America, sends his bombers over the USA. He sets off a holocaust of violence that will engulf the continent.
As war rages on land and in the air, occupied Canada and Utah hope for liberation at last, when the Americans are at their weakest. The prisoners in Featherston’s concentration camps – both the former slaves and anyone who dares to preach justice or democracy – fear that their only possible fate will be annihilation. And somehow, the USA resists the Confederate invasion – but at enormous cost.
In Settling Accounts Harry Turtledove creates a devastating new chapter in the conflict between two the two American superpowers, one that must surely result in total victory for one side or the other.
‘The author handles his huge cast with admirable skill. The insights into racial politics elevate this novel to a status above mere entertainment, although it provides that aplenty’ Publishers Weekly

Harry Turtledove
Settling Accounts: Drive to the East
Published October 2005 by Hodder & Stoughton at £18.99
ISBN: 0340826878
Harry Turtledove’s brilliantly-imagined alternate history that began with the Confederacy winning the American Civil War and continued with a Great War that left it on its knees now approaches its most terrifying hour, as a resurgent South scents victory.
It is 1942, and the Confederate States of America are locked in a tangle of jagged, blood-soaked battle lines with the United States of America. In Richmond, dictator Jake Featherston is shocked by what his own aircraft have done in Philadelphia - killing U. S. president Al Smith in a barrage of bombs. But he presses ahead with a secret plan on the dusty plains of Texas, where a so-called detention camp hides a far more evil purpose.
The United States face a furious thrust by Confederate army into Pennsylvania. But with the industrial heartland under siege, Canada in revolt and US ships fighting against the Japanese in the Sandwich Islands, the most dangerous place in the world may be overlooked.
The master of alternate history has recast the tumultuous twentieth century and created an epic that is powerful, bold and as convincing as it is provocative.
‘Turtledove [is] the standard-bearer for alternate history.’ USA Today
'Turtledove's series is an epic achievement, a meticulously worked-out alternate history of the 20th century's great two-act tragedy… A fine performance by a master-craftsman' S.M.Sterling
