Jack Brehm
That Others May Live
Published March 2000 by Random House Audio at £12.99
ISBN: 1-85686-673-4
Read by Barry Nolan Senior Master Sergeant Jack Brehm is a pararescue jumper, or a 'Pj'. He is one of the select few members of the US Air Force who have made it through the intensive, gruelling physical and mental endurance tests known as the Pipeline. Little-known, multi-skilled and astonishingly brave, the Pjs' primary mission is the rescue of pilots shot down behind enemy lines. They are the unsung heroes who swim through monster-sized waves or who dangle precariously over raging seas. It was Jack Brehm who coordinated the rescue efforts that were chronicled in the bestselling book The Perfect Storm. That Others May Live not only tells the story of Jack's life but
also shares the stories of fellow Pjs, living and dead, who made careers of saving apparently doomed lives, at huge risk to themselves. Thrilling, shocking and utterly compelling, this is real-life heroic action-adventure at its fascinating best.

Read by William S. Burroughs (CD version)
'Junk is not, like alcohol or weed, a means to increased enjoyment of life. Junk is not a kick. It is a way of life.'
Thus, one of the creative visionaries of the Beat movement recites the junk equation, the calculus by which heroin redefines the addict's world. Burroughs's quasi-autobiographical narrative makes for a raw, fragmented and disturbing account of hallucinations, ghostly nocturnal wanderings, strange sexual encounters and quests to ease the hunger of the needle. Read in the incantational tones of Burroughs himself, this legendary account of one man's challenge to turn self-destruction into art is as shocking and powerful as it has ever been.
