But at Amazon.co.uk Sir Arthur Conan Doyle The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Giftset Published October 2000 by Penguin Audio at £17.99 ISBN: 0-14-095459-7
Read by Douglas Wilmer
Twelve classic tales of detection in which Sherlock Holmes demonstrates his mental mastery over even the most devious criminal.
In a Scandal in Bohemia, Holmes finds himself having to carry out a crime of his own to protect a royal reputation. A Case of Identity sees Holmes unmasking a devious disguise in order to trace a missing person. In The Red-Headed League, that organisation advertises for a red-headed man to join them but circumstances turn the matter into what Holmes calls a ‘refreshingly interesting’ case, and The Boscombe Valley Mystery is not a mystery for very long to the astute and observant Holmes.
In The Five Orange Pips, Holmes must discover the fearful significance of the pips and a threatening message that accompanies them, while The Man with the Twisted Lip has a startling revelation for Dr Watson when Holmes discovers the whereabouts – and identity – of a missing man. The Blue Carbuncle tells of a diamond that has been concealed in a goose – but by whom? – and The Speckled Band sees Holmes exposing a fiendish murder and preventing another such hideous crime. Intriguing, puzzling and utterly compelling, these four stories from Dr Watson’s casebook depict Holmes at the height of his powers.
An innocent engineer has been caught up in devilish deeds and has the wounds to prove it in The Engineers’ Thumb. In The Noble Bachelor a bride goes missing immediately after the wedding ceremony and Holmes is called in to track her down, and in The Beryl Coronet Holmes must discover the thief of an invaluable item of jewellery. When Miss Hunter is given extraordinary tasks to perform in The Copper Beeches, she turns to Holmes and Watson to find out why. Follow the dazzling logic and brilliant deduction of Sherlock Holmes in this third volume of adventures.

Douglas Wilmer has had a distinguished cinema, television and stage career. He first assumed the role of Sherlock Holmes in the 1964 TV production of The Speckled Band.

Read by Freddy Jones
(CD version)
It was a brave man who would cross the wild Devon moorlands in the darkness…
For the ancient legend of the hound of the Baskervilles had persisted in family history for generations. Indeed it was Sir Charles’s mysterious death in the grounds of Baskerville Hall that brought Sherlock Holmes to the scene of one of his most famous and intriguing cases.
What had it been that inspired such terror in Watson as it loomed out of the darkness? A spectral hound broken loose from hell; or a creature of infinite patience and cunning, with a smiling face and a murderous heart…?

Freddie Jones’s credits include Peter Brook’s acclaimed RSC’s Marat/Sade, The Dresser (West End), The Caesars (Golden Nymph Award – Best Actor), Vaclav Havel’s The Interview, The Elephant Man and Fellini’s And the Ship Sailed On.
